white smoke

Lately my car has been blowing alot of white smoke out of the exhuast. I can smell antifreeze. I pretty sure its the head gasket, but the car isn't overheating yet. Is there anything else it could be.

Is it doing it just when you start it up after it has sat for 10 min? Or does it just blow out the smoke when at idle? If it does it when you start it up it is the valve seals gone bad(mine does the same thing).

I agree with stub25 if it is a puff of smoke on when you start it up. It's just your valve seals. If you smell antifreeze, where is the smell coming underhood? or exhaust? Underhood? Check your intake gaskets for anti-freeze around the water jackets. The intake seal might be leaking anti-freeze and getting sucked in through and intake port. Exhaust? What i would recommend doing is a compression test. Check every cylinder and record pressures for each individual cylinder. When your done you might have a cylinder or 2 with resonably less pressure than the rest of them. Once you get the cylinder(s) with low pressure you can assume that head has the blown gasket. If around you could end up with a much worse problem like you suspect a bad head gasket i highly recomend this test because if you drive a cracked head or even worse a cracked block!!!

oh yeah........ also check your oil. is it a milky, light brownish color? also good indicator of blown gasket.
