o2 question
My question is could i have screwed up my o2 sensor when i started up my new motor and it was running so lean that my headers were glowing red? The reason I ask is that Iam not running rich at an idle but as soon as give it gas black smokes comes out of the tailpipes also when I hook up my voltmeter to my o2 sensor at an idle the readings jump all over the place. I also think my stock air filter housing and related duct work may to restrictive causing the rich under acceration. Any replies would be great
Oh by the way I have a
406 slp runners ported--ported plenum-- ported to max base
very mild cam with out of the box trick flow 23* heads--24 lbs injectors
IT was a very mild buildup with about 9.25TO1 compression
and a custom ed wright chip I just installed today

You're running too much fuel through it..unburnt fuel is reigniting in the hot header pipes and making them glow. Also evident by the black smoke.
And yes, you could foul the o2 sensor by too much fuel, but I don't think a lean condition would harm it.

I had a similar problem oh so long ago when I did my first head/cam swap. The problem turned out to be the timing. My timing was off by like 20 degrees. I swapped from a stock damper to a fluidampr and the timing marks were different. Moral of the story: Be 100% sure your timing is correct.

Gunning for NA 11's with bigger cam, bigger stall, and bigger exhaust.

wackytower,
adjust timing, reinstall your stock chip.
check fuel pressure. how long did your injectors
setup before use? see if any of this could
possibly bandaid your problem.
the stock chip will lean the mixture from the custom
chip.
timing is very important. timing 8-10deg
with bypass disconnected.
fuel pressure 38-42#

Your O2 readings should bounce all over the place. That is normal. Its when it doesn't move all over the place that its bad.

Thanks for the replies. Iam thinking my stock air intake might be causeing my rich condition because its so restrictive. My CAI and scanner should be here Monday That should be able tell me alot more whats going on. The headers were glowing with my stock chip and with retarded timing during the first start up of the motor. I fixed the timing and the headers never glowed again and but the car ran super rich all the time even giving me a flooded condition when restarting. With the Ed Wright chip I only Have black smoke when accerating. So I guess I have to wait see what happens when I get the CAI on and have the scanner so I can see what the computer is seeing.
