Question on cooling fans
Question on cooling fans
I bought a wrecked 89 GTA with 5.7 out of an insurance lot a while back and today i noticed when i started the engine up both fans come on immediatly. When i turn the key only halfway the pass side fan comes on then when i go the full turn to start the engine the driver side fan comes on. Since I bought the car from an insurance lot I have no clue on mods but how does this work?
Because my 88 GTA 5.7 the fans work sometimes and other times they don't like yesterday waiting for a bridge that went up it started overheating on me again so i had to shut it down but sometimes its ok sometimes it isn't and I really just want it to do the same thing the 89 does because i could leave it on all day and it keeps really cool.

You Should Try Replacing The Rad Fan Switch. It is located on the passenger side head towards the back. That's the problem i had with my IROC.

I assume that you are talking about the fans on the 1989? If so, the previous owner may have manually wired up the fans, change the fan temperature switch in the passenger head, and/or modified the eprom.
i heard there are alot of problems with the fans on the gta's i know normally there wouldnt be a switch (at least on my 87 there wasent) but the person i bought it from made his own switch and hid it in the center console, i have heard of a lot of people adding switches for the fans and i have also heard of a couple people just straight wiring them so they are always on (when the car is turned on of course) i personally just leave my fans switch on all the time

My fans have been wired to stay on all the time when the car is on. It is great because the temp never rises above 160* even in traffic. Before, the car used to get really hot in traffic or on really hot days. Definitely worth it.
