you don't need a new tank, just pic up a walbro pump from
http://members.home.com/syclone/APE/fuelpump.html

That will be more than enough to feed a lt1

but the gad tank that i have now is for a carbureted engine and the pumps needs to go on the gas tank. can i use the forth gen, or do i need to get a tpi tank from a 3rd gen, and then put the 4th gen pump in it?

you mean the pump is on the block? I thought by 87 they would have an in-tank electrical pump. Besides unless the car was retrofitted with a carb, that car should be fuel injected, and then you would have an intank even the TBI's had a low pressure pump hat was around what would be needed for a carb'd engine.

But to answer your question directly, no I don't think a 4th gen will work. Your best bet is to try and find a gas tank from a late third gen and put that walbro pump in.

I have a brand new efi fuel tank and a used intank pump with sender and pickup for a TPI car. It's 45psi I believe.
Let me know if you need them.

i'm telling you the pump is driven by a pushrod, and is the only one. i just need to know what gastank will fit in mine? the 4th gen with the lt1 pump already in it, or will the lt1 pump fit in a 3rd gen? if so what kind of tank from what car? thanks.

If I know my cars well enough the 4th gen tank will not fit into our cars. Your best bet would go find a TPI tank with the pump in it. Also I am not 100% certain on this one but I do not think that the pump will fit into the TPI tank I think that if you find a TPI tank with the pump intact you will be fine feeding you motor with that.

Ok here since no one can aswer this right I will.

ALlh you need is the "sending unit and fuel pump from a tpi" car. It will interchange wit your carb pick up.

I did the same swap ona friends 88 camaro before and it worked fine with out any problems.

where is my carb pickup lacated? my fuel pump now is located on the side of the block and is a mechanical one. does a tpi tank have the pump inside the tank like the 4th gen, or elsewhere?

Ok, to clarify something, I OWN an 87 4BBL LG4 Formula that I converted over to TPI.

There WAS a small fuel pump in my gastank, it was only good for something like 4# of pressure though, I took my TPI gastank, which was rusty, Since my tank was better condition I took out the sending unit and swapped the senders, I have had NO problems. I replaced the whole pump assembly which includes the filter, pump, level gage sender, etc.

THERE was however a fuel pump on the right front of the engine as well. I removed it, the rod, and got a fancy chrome plate (that NO one will ever see) and put it in its place.

For my complete conversion visit my site, after the splash page, on the menupage on the left there is an item called "modifying your Formula" It might help you with some of your questions.

The tanks between the LG4 and the TPI should be the same. ALL you would need is the TPI sending unit to drop in your existing tank. The LT1 uses around 40 to 50 psi fuel pressure. The same for TPI. You would need the TPI Fuel pump, and also remove the mech fuel pump on the block, the push rod, and get a block off plate.

I would personally look at the pumps to see if there are any differences. If none that you can see that I would get the TPI pump since that is what fits the sending unit. But I don't know if they are different. I can check for ya I work in a parts store and can let you know what I find out tomarrow night.
