SLP or anyone with header knowledge
i guess this question could apply to anyone with headers and air conditioning. i have an 86 IROC w/ a/c on the driver side. has anyone gotten headers to fit without modifying the a/c bracket? Could i survive without this bracket. The bracket goes right over the manifold. I just called home and my headers have arrived with the install kit and cat adapter but I bought the kit that doesn't come with the bracket. He said the $110 kit was for A.I.R. and I didn't order a.i.r. What should I do?
A.I.R ins not Air conditioning, its you emissions stuff. It should bolt up and you A/C should not be bothered. YOu will have to rmove you air pump and all those silly little tubes coming out of the maifolds.

i don't have the air pump on the car nor the reservoir tubes coming from the manifolds. Just looking at the bracket over the driver side manifold appears to only be a 3" gap... if that. Should I just try to lower the primary under the bracket and up to the head without removing the a/c assembly.

Well this must be the v-belt setup since it is an 86 (my 87 is also a v-belt setup). I no longer have the A/C on my car but as I recall, there was a tubular metal bracket that extended from the A/C compressor back towards the firewall at a downward 45* or so angle and had one of the manifold/header bolts go through it. My car had the Edelbrock TES on it when I bought it and the A/C was still installed. I seem to remember that there was a spacer between the bracket and the header flange that made up for the difference in the thickness of the old manifold versus the header flange. Is that what you are talking about? I no longer have to deal with this stuff since I removed the A/C system when I did my engine build (it was already empty and the compressor was shot so.....). If that is the bracket you are talking about, I think it wouldn't be all that bad if you ran without it. Brackets like that are there to provide stability to the belt system to lengthen bearing life for the pulleys and preserve the belts themselves. You really should not have a problem getting it to work though. The install kit should have spacers and washers to accomodate all of your accesories if it is designed for your exact application (v-belt setup, not serpentine). I do not have experience with the SLP headers myself so maybe someone else can shed some light on this as well.
Good luck.........

i had the same problem you did you have two options mark the bracket so a bigger circle can be cut or call slp and get the bracket that's what i did.
