305 TPI on a 350?

I currently have a TPI setup for an 86 Iroc but the engine was trashed. I am now looking to put the TPI system on a 350. I've heard that the 305 and 350 TPI's are interchangable except for the PROM. I was wondering how different they were and if the one I have now (for 305) could be used and just put the TPI on a 350? Trying to do this low budget. Any advice or comments are appreciated.

A new 350 prom cost about $75 from GM, cheapest new one you will find. Unless You find a used one. Otherwise car should run fine.

ok everything should bolt up fine, as long as both engines are pre-87 or after 87 if one is pre and one after, u will have to egg the four corner bolt holes to make the manifold bolt up, u will also need some 22lb injectorsopposed to the 19lb u have now , and the prom from a 350, other than that its pretty much a direct swap, also u may be able to use the 305 injectors with a adjustable fuel pressure regulator cranked up real high...not sure tho

Welcome aboard first off. Where exactly in MN are you I am just west of Minneapolis in Hopkins. Now to business yea it will bolt up if you have (as stated above) pre-87 305 and pre-87 350 or post 87 305 and post 87 350. You can use the 19lb injectors but you will need a AFPR. There are people here that are doing that exact same thing. It will be a lot cheaper buying or making an AFPR then buying new injectors. And yea you will have to get a 350 prom and also as stated above you can buy one from GM or if you really know cars you can start burning your own for not a whole lot more. Hope that helps out also if you are not in a car club check out www.mnfbody.com pretty cool people in that group.

PROM
P - Programmable
R - Read
O - Only
M - memory

More accurately our cars use an "EPROM" where the "E" is Erasable. the EPROM is the "chip" that carries all the information for running your car.

Another varient is: EEPROM - Electronically Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory

does that help?

The PROM is the chip that controls the computer.

Do they really cost $75? I've gotten them cheaper, like $45-50.

To put a 305 TPI on a 350, you need a new chip (maybe) and larger injectors.

Another way to think of it is, since your car's ECM needs a program just like your home computer does, it has to have a way to store the program. On your home computer, you store your programs on the hard drive. On the ECM, it is stored on the PROM.

(Now I know that is way over-simplifying things, but its the idea that counts here!)

I paid $75 for mine in Pipestone, MN at Amdahl Motors. May be cheaper for older cars.
