About how much would a new ECM cost from a parts shop? How hard are they to install? And also if I was to buy a performance chip for my car, where does the chip go? I know silly questions...but I wont learn if I dont ask...thanks

What's your car? They used different ECMs over the years and for different types of induction systems.

For some ECMs, you can use a "cross-reference" list to get the same ECM but from a commonly available car. Getting a 7730 ECM for an L98 F-body is more expensive at a wrecking yard than a 7730 ECM from an early 90s 3.1 V6 Cavalier....even though they are the same ECM.

Yes, change the ecm. Just make sure you get the right one. Make sure you get one from a 90-92 TPI 350 car (speed density). It will make things easier on you.

Maybe I am not reading your post right but if you are asking if you need to switch from a TBI to a TPI ecm for the swap the answer is yes the TBI ecm will not run the TPI

What the other's said...TPI uses a completely different ECM from TBI. And SD TPI is different than MAF TPI.
