The Truth About MAF

I have some questions about the MAF sensor.

First the screens, I have heard so many reasons why they are there. Almost everyone says take them out but don't you need them to straighten out the air traveling over the sensor and doesn't it increase air velocity. I am not an expert but if the air entering your engine is moving at a higher velocity and is not turbulent won't it help your torque and HP?

Second the heat sink. I can see why people grind these down because it disrupts air flow. But don't you need this heat sink to cool the circuitry? Or why are they there?

Can anyone explain all of this to me?
