Pinging noise with many details
Pinging noise with many details
Alright to start out this is an 88 GTA 5.7 TPI. What just started happening recently was a loud pinging noise under hard accelration from about 2000 - 3200 RPM. At about 3200 it pretty much will go away. Through first gear under heavy acceleration it doesn't ping until it kicks into second. Under light acceleration in the 2000 - 3000 range it won't ping at all. Revving in park hard up to 4 grand also no pinging. Oil pressure after a long time of driving goes just around 25 at idle and shoots up to about 45 - 50 under acceleration. Temp stays at around 160 all times. Also in the morning under hard Acceleration there is no pinging at all till it warms up. Had the car since February and it has only seen 93 and 94 octane. I just went out and did all this to give you guys as much info as i could so if you have anything else you need to know just fire away.
Here is a list of Mods i've gotten done so far. MSD 6AL, Accell 8.8 wires, Bosch Platinum 4's, Aftermarket Chip that was in car when i got it no clue what kind just says "Powerchip" on it, 160 thermo, Higher flow MAF after gutted MAF died, TPIS Airfoil, Edelbrock TES headers, Hooker Aerochamber catback, and computer did die and had a new GM replacement put in.
Thanks alot in advance for anyone who can help me out.

What is this High Flow MAF?.
The chip has limits to what it understands, so if this is any higher flowing MAF then it will skew the reported airflow. If the prom doesn't know about the differences, the it can't make the right decisions.
2,400-3,200 are where SBC are most prone to detonaton. For you to hear the detonation, means the calibration is probably more then 6d overly advanced.
Sorry about that. To clarify the high flow MAF its a replacement i got through NAPA and it has no screens and a thin computer chip in the middle and the guy simply called it the "High flow MAF" so I said ok give me that, got it cheap since he is an old friend. He took my VIN and had it 2 days later for me. The chip was in the car before I got this new MAF also.
My timing is set right I checked that all out. The chip I didn't have anything to do with it since it was in when i got the car and wasn't told about it. Only thing I do know about it is it says "Powerchip" on it and thats all I know. Could this chip be causing my problems?
I'm going to hit the bed it's been a long day i'll check back in the morning.

you could have bad fuel. try putting some 89 into the tank when it gets low. it may work may not. but on more than one occasion i have heard that a bad load of fuel can cause spark knock.if your timing is right it may be the fuel. i would try a new set of plugs ac delco for me and thats it.
maybe this helps...but i doubt it
my $.02

WOW am I a confirmed idiot somebody punch me quick right in the face.
I JUST go outside and it occurs to me i never checked my oil after all this....so i go ahead and look....the end of the dipstick has about 3 or 4 centimeters of oil on it!!!
I just filled it a quart and a half and now i got no pinging noise at all and i pull out my PCV valve and white puffs of smoke are coming out.
Sorry everyone looks like i found my problem.
The white puffs mean my valves are screwed right? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Ouch, that's a harsh way to find out your out of oil. I bet your cylinder walls look like a worn out cd. Oh, and to refer to your question "yes thats what it means". When you pull the heads off to fix the problem I would inspect the cylinders pretty close.

Yeah this isn't so cool. But now I got a reason to spend all this spare loot I guess on a nice st of heads and if need be an engine rebuild so this could turn out to be fun.
Alright someone tell me if this makes any sense. I'm driving around and the pinging came back again around the same spots....So I stop home and i pop the hood and i'm flipping the throttle with my finger and i hear the ping. I looked to the left and see the noise comes everytime my idle pulley moves.....I stick my ear right next to the pulley and it gets much louder right there everytime I hit it. Now am I just nuts of could this stupid thing be making the noise somehow?
