383 MAF Questions

Hi guys. I just got into third gens and just found your website a few days ago. I'm more of a fan of the fourth generation 'maro, but going to college now, i'm a tad more pressed for money. Don't get me wrong, i love my '89 camaro, but i do think the 4th gen has better lines too it, so plz don't hold it against me. anywho, on to my question.

As i said before, i have an '89 305 IrocZ TPI camaro with an auto4 with only some mild mods. I've recently come into posession of a 383 from a donor '88 corvette. A gentleman who is a big fan of Corvette Fever magazine built thier 383 TPI motor for a C4 pretty much word for word and part for part. Shortly thereafter, it was wrecked pretty impressively, so i got the motor for maybe a 10th of what he put into it. Anywho, i specifically got an 89 camaro for the MAF as opposed to SD as i'm a decent mechanic, but not a whiz with computers. i was curious as to how the MAF in a 5.0 would handle the increased cubes and airflow. I know a MAF will compensate up to a point as long as it has the fuel to match, so i know i'd have to upgrade the injector size, but i've never worked this indepth on a 3rd gen before, so any comments, critiques or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
~Flint

Re: 383 MAF Questions

The MAF will handle it just fine, up to 255 grams per second, where it maxes out. You will have more of a problem with the stock fuel and timing tables in the computer not liking whatever camshaft you have in it. If you change fuel injector sizes, which you will want to put in larger than the stock 19lbs you have, it will require a custom computer chip.

Re: 383 MAF Questions

yeah your gonna need to know whats all in that 383 inorder to tell how that MAF system will like that motor.

I can tell you stock 305 programming wont handle the 383 too well. A 350 prom may work abit better but your still gonna need work to a point

But the MAF will handle that motor with some tuning. Ifyou dont wanna do it yourself then get someone to do it for you or try a mail order place

Re: 383 MAF Questions

Heck with all that maf stuff and obd1. Upgrade to OBDII and be done with it. I see guys on the DIY board fighting for awhile to get a fuel table or spark table or idle , cold start, "surging" yada yada. 15 minutes on the dyno with OBD 2 and your done forever. I'll run like a new car. Get in and go.

Both cars in my sig, with the bone stock Chevy Express van tune got over 20MPG and "ZERO" drivability issues. Tweaked it for more power and couldnt be happier.

Re: 383 MAF Questions

Use a 350 chip and at least 24# injectors, AFPR would help. What cam does it have?
