Still a newbie to this sort of thing. trying to change the air temp sensor under the plenum but im not sure how to remove it without causeing more headaches for my self. are there any gaskets i need to buy before i start this? is there any tech articles or pictures i can see how to do this? it looks easy but i just want to make sure my bases are covered. This 86 iroc is my daily driver and im 25 miles from civilization so getting parts after its torn apart would not be an easy thing unless i jumped on a horse to get to town and lord knows i would rather walk than drive a mustang. Look real close and remove all the plastic vacuum lines from the plenum, they break real easy. Loosen one side of the runner bolts on intake, this will allow the plenum to come out easier.

Fix/find a car to drive while the other one is down.

 

You should be able to do it easily. Disconnect all the vacuum lines and unbolt the throttle linkage bracket. Disconnect the intake hose. Remove the 4 bolts that hod the throttle body on so you don't have to disconnect all of the stuff associated with it. Unbolt the bolts attatching the runners to the plenum and pull it out gently. Be careful not to damage the gaskets and you should be ok reusing them. For what they cost though, it might be a good time to replace them. Good luck.

 

You need to buy new intake runner gaskets and throttle body gasket (if you take the TB off). Disconnect the vacuum hoses to the plennum and fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the throttle body from the plennum. Remove the upper intake runner screws (you may need to loosen the lower intake runner bolts to provide play so you can remove the plennum). remove the plennum and do your change. It's a easy task just time consuming...

 

You'll also need a rubber mallet (some gentile hits with the mallet will coax it loose).
When I polished my intake system I got the full gasket kit (most of the old gaskets were fused to the intake and runners),

 

Im doing this myself, I just took out the bolts that hold the runners in the plenum, but havnt taken out the bolts that hold the runners to the intake. It still feels bolted down, i know I have the vacuum line for the brake booster, and the 2 other vacuum lines, but shouldnt I be able to pull it off without having to completely remove the runners?

 

yes you should, but its probably just stuck, bump it a little, probably gonna mess the gaskets up,later jimmy

 

Just loosen the bottom intake bolts (a turn or two). Unless you are going to replace the gaskets anyway. Double check to make sure you have removed all the bolts. Sometimes the parts are tight because one bolt gets missed. Two of the intake runner bolts are under the plenum, one behind the egr solenoid, the other in front of the dizzy.
