TPI 305 Rebuild advice

Hey guys,
Ive asked u guys for help before and all of u were more than happy to give me the honest truth. So this time i wanna ask something that may have been asked before but i was unable to find the direct info for it so i'll ask it anyways!

Ive got an lb9 motor and am interested in possibly rebuilding it with some new forged internals, fast-burn heads and some better than stock components.

Now what im wondering is, if i did all that and added say some good headers, + lt4 cam + better valves + springs and ported the plenums could i overcome the the TPI's inherent weakness in the top-end with some mild boost. If i used a stock plenum or the Miniram or super ram with a Supercharger or a turbo could i actually make up for the restrictive intake?

BtW i know many of you are gonna say that the 305 should be tossed and turned into a boat anchor but really this motor stock makes like 5 ponies less than the 350 u guys cherish so much, prolly has a better cam in it stock too for the 350 of same year =)

And is there anyone thats done this b4, if so what sort of Rwhp could i expect.
Or am i just better off doing an LS1 swap? I'd sooner swap to an LS1 than a 350 as It would cost me nearly as much here in BC.

Thanks in advance and CHEERS!

Your already aware that it's your intake that is restrictive. Adding a better cam, w/better heads, will improve your low end, but the intake will still remain restrictive for the top. Throw a Holley Stealth Ram into the mix, it'll fix your top end blues, and have Thunder Racing grind you a cam that will make up for any low end power losses....

Re: TPI 305 Rebuild advice

It's my feeling that the TPI intake with a gutted airbox and K&N filters provides enough air for a little 305.

I don't believe that replacing the intake with a different NA intake will do much of anything performance-wise from an "air restriction" point of view. Different intake Runners will change where the powerband is.

Now Supercharging a 305 is a different game. Willie ran a Paxton Supercharger on his 305 with great results. At this point he is bringing it back online with Dual Turbo's instead of the Supercharger!

Do a search for posts by Willie.

Oh johnny you went and did it...building a 305 is a 3rdgen no no..lol..unless your mw66nova or fast355 those are the 2 fastest 305s on the boards I believe but they both run carbs.... Ive got the same motor as you and I would suggest not spending money on forged internals cause unless its a full out race car then its really not needed...as you know the tpi is all torque so either get a good cam and head combo to work with it on the low end or switch out that intake. As far as OVERCOMING the tpi intake its not possible.. you can help it buy porting and a partial siameising but the length of stock runners stay about the same and thats the real problem with upper rpms. Are you dead set on keeping it fuel infected? You could always pull out your harness carefully and switch to an aggresive cam head and carb setup for pennies(alot of pennies) and get a 350+hp 305 and you could always switch back. When its all said and done though a forged, efi and turbocharged 305 would be awsome but thats a boat load of money and as alot of members will tell you............alot.............really almost everyone here ... that money put into a 350 would give you more hp than a 305... good luck
