ram air induction

Okay... I don't know if this is the right forum for this, but has anyone modified their intake by porting the air from the fog lights up to the air filter inlets. I have a 1987 IROC with K&N filters, and have already cut out those plastic "traps" below the filters... I guess those are for blocking massive debris entry? Or maybe a monsoon? Anyway, feedback on this? I saw an article on this in mods here at third gen, but has anyone got some practical experience on this? Thanks!

It may take SOME air from the rdiator, which I wouldn't do, but I don't think it would really hurt anything. But I don't really think it would do much, and if it did, You'd never feel it. The biggest restrictions are the filters, which ya gotta have of course, and the actual TB runners ETC.

I don't think it would really do anything one way or another...but I could be wrong.

I already modified my air box to do the ram air setup that is in the tech articles on this site. I will be adding it when i put in the new engine. Many people have said that they notice a huge difference at the higher rpms. I dont doubt them. By just adding an open air element on my TBI engine...I noticed a huge difference. As for the hot air....I think the ducting would keep the hot air from the radiator out (if you get the right kind). ANd they also usually come wrapped in insulation..so you may beable to keep the insulation on so the heat wont get in.

If were talking "new" engine, then all bets are off, it may make a huge difference.
I'm thinking stock tpi...

I made some ram-air ducts using HVAC round sheetmetal ducts from Home Depot, basically and 4" short elbow and a 4" to 5" reducer (or expander in this case). Each elbow sits at the bottom on the cooling duct and the reducer is on top of the elbow and snugged up to the bottom of each air filter. I gained 1 mph in trap speed at the track with this setup and my MAT reading was always the same as the outside air (relocated MAT in Y-piece). Cost me maybe $20 for everything.

OK... got the ducting... I also used a disc cutter to remove those traps, and I'll hook it up today.... I NEVER have a problem with cooling, due to a rheostat controlled fan switch with a probe into the radiator hose... I'll post a follow up
