IROC ticking after head swap
it sounds like a lifter, but i could be wrong. they were set at 0 lash with the engine out of the car. just installed world heads and slp headers and the "ticking" persists even when warmed up. from under the car, it sounds like it's hitting the transmission oil pan, from under the hood, it sounds like cylinder 7 or 8. Could something be coming from the tranny? the noise intensifies when giving it gas. thanks in advance.

Maybe a misadjusted rocker arm??

Not sure if it's possible, but I've seen it on diesels before. Sometimes when pressure is let off of the lifter it will overextend so to speak. Naturally you get a valve hitting the piston, which usually causes a spun bearing. Check your valve lash again like the other guys suggested.

could also be a small exhaust leak...you say you just installed hedders. Also...definetly readjust rocker arms

I say check the headers for a leak. They will make a tick thats sounds like a lifter.

My SLP headers tick real lightly on the driver side, sompe of those rear bolts are a real bear to get tight.

Rocker arms should be adjusted 1/2-1 turn past zero lash. Sounds like that's your problem. Also, could be a rocker arm nut loosening up. My 86' IROC had a nut that kept loosening up on the #6 cylinder.

Yeah, sounds liek you need an educated ear to tell you if it's a header gasket leak or a valve or two set wrong (or perhaps something compley unrelated, you never know.)
Considering the mods you just did, those are your likely culprits. Are you sure you set the valves correctly? TAGTA350 is right, they are supposed to be set 1/2-1 turn past zero lash, where zero lash is the point of no play in the pushrod (but before you start compressing the lifter.) If this was your first time setting valves i'd bet a $ this is your problem, it's easy to screw up your first time, i did. Luckily i didn't kill the cam. I went to one trunk past a compressed lifter. Needless to say, that engine made funny noises.

it isn't a rocker arm. i was going to get under the car for closer inspection but couldn't get the jack underneath because of it being lowered. there are a few spots from the y-pipe to cat that weren't welded completely closed at the top. yet it still sounds like it's coming from the tranny oil pan. i doubt a leak would sound like this. something is hitting.
Have you done anything with the transmission or torque converter? Does the noise hang around while you rev up the motor?? Check to see if the torque converter is tight against the flywheel. This will cause a ticking sound if its loose. I had this problem on mine so I put a washer to act as a spacer between the converter and flywheel. It completely took care of the problem. Its just something that could be checked pretty easily by taking of the flywheel/converter cover and checking the bolts.

yes, if i slowly open up throttle, i can tell the noise gets louder. when i did the head swap, the engine was pulled with the tranny. Pretty sure everything was put together just the same it was pulled apart. It doesn't really sound like something banging around. It's much more consistent.
