New to this TPI thing, please help!!

Hey everyone. I have been running my 406 for almost three years now, and I think I'd like to make it a TPI motor. I have a complete TPI system from a 87 350 Camaro, and I'd like to throw it on my 406. I'm sure it's not that easy, though. So what all will I need to do? My motor is about 9.5:1 compression, and has a hydraulic Isky cam in it, I think it's a 292. The motor has 882 heads on it, also. It's making 300hp going through the LG4 manifolds (soon to be SLP and 3" all the way back) and stock exhaust (minus the cat) right now. What all will I need to do to make this work? the only fuelie car I have hands-on experience with in modding is a 5.0 Mustang (yeehaa) that I put a E303 cam in and ported the heads...for that I needed a new MAF sensor and everything worked fine...what can I expect???

Thanks

Dave

I really can't speak to how the torque band of the TPI will work with your heads and cam but to place the TPI on your engine you would need an O2 bung welded into your headers, a 5.7 knock sensor, standalone harness from someone like Painless Wiring and correct year ECM with a custom prom, a high pressure fuel pump in the tank. Thats just some of the stuff off the top of my head.

basically that and just switch to a mild camshaft. 292 is really large for a stock intake tpi.

For what I have read, the stock tpi intake sistem was originally designed to meet the air requirements of a 305 engine, that's why the maximum hp is reached at apx 4400rpm, after that, the long tubes don't flow enough air to fill up the cylinders. Now with a big cubic inch motor like a 406, it will be like a person trying to run breathing trough a straw.

If you really want to go tpi, you best bet will be going with something with shorter runners like a miniram. Good luck.

if you do some serious porting to the intake and siamesing (sp?) is a must! you should be ok with your cam if you siamiese. just look for the articles (search)

Definately need to do some major porting of the intake and plenum, and get larger runners. Almost better to get the Super-ram plenum from Accel... its tough.. although TPI has the great low end torque... you'll starve your 400+ cid

I have a 406 TPI in my rather large K5 Blazer...........and it does starve, but not till well over 4500 rpm. Up till then it rocks......has 52mm throttle body, 24lb injectors, not sure on which heads or which cam but it moves out like right now. Painless wiring harness is what I used, hedman headers with an O2 bung welded in the collector, custom chip to get rid of VSS and VATS, etc. It is a SD setup too by the way.

Future mods...........hmm, not sure, but I keep reading this board every day and learn as I go. The guys here are fantastic.
