bunch of timing/throttle body questions
just tried to set my timing on my 1986 tpi 5.0 automatic trans am
when the car was cold and just started up with the ecm wire still connected the timing was way off (maybe normal with cold engine?) like way passed to the left facing the car way passed 12 btdc
once car warmed up i disconnected the wire, timing went down to 5 btdc
supposed to be at 6
i have a high idle i was hoping my timing was the problem because i couldnt get the idle low enough doin the whole iac and tps min air procedure
car idles 800-1000 warmed up
car is now at 0 degrees idles around 800 my dad suspects my new throttle body
we take the idle screw back but the throttle plate that hits the idle screw wont go back after a certain point and still a good 1/4 or just under of an inch left of the idle screw exposed
on my original throttle body i can see the throttle plate go back a little further leaving 1/8 of the screw give or take left before if will stop moving back.
my concern/ question is when the car was fully warmed between turning the distributor and conneciting disconnecting the ecm control wire i noticed no difference in sound or idle on the engine.
didnt hear any knocking or pinging
engine sound/idle didnt change between 6-0 btdc
this is just odd to me i never did timing before my dad suspects the blades nside the new throttle body might be hitting not allowing it to go back any futher
we are going to mess with the new throttle body and even see how car runs with old throttle body
once the throttle body problem/idle is fixed i can get my timing right
but when we plugged the ecm wire back in it didnt advance or retard the timing jsut stayed at 0degrees is this right?
any ideas if this sounds normal to not notice any difference when palying with the timing? or what could be the issue
if anything the car doesnt sound as loud as before but still idles 800-1000 fully warmed up
i didnt take teh car for a drive i had to go to work so all these readings were done in park
i have no engine codes but i did have to unbolt the egr solenoid to get to the distributor hold down screw the bolt grounds the solenoid would that have any effect of my timing results?
