Help with leaking gas tank!

Ok about 3 years ago I sold my Trans Am to a good friend of mine when I bought a 4th gen. He bought it and started doing some work to it (mostly cosmetic) so it sat in his garage the entire time. He drove it one time about a mile and in that time his tank leaked all the fuel out of the tank. He said when he got it back home you could see the fuel leaking from the top of the tank so he put it back in the garage after it stopped leaking out.

A couple weeks later he put some gas in it and let it run for about an hour without a drop of fuel coming out. Later I bought it from him and he drove it the 4 or 5 miles from his house to mine without a problem. I have moved it around my driveway a couple of times with no problems either. I want to drive my car but I am scared this problem will happen again and leave me stranded someplace without gas.

We checked over the lines as much as we could without dropping the tank and see no damage. There is a very, very faint, gas smell under the car from time to time (I noticed only when I was installing my seats and was sitting on the ground beside the car) but I think that might be caused by my broken charcoal canister.

Someone help me!

Re: Help with leaking gas tank!

we just changed my brother in law's tank becuase it was leaking. 92 RS. it had 6 or 7 pinholes in the bottom that you COULD NOT see. We had the same thing, it was OK, put gas in it, no leaks. He drives it home, and boom...all the gas leaks out.

try taking off the heat shield and fill up the tank. put a container under it to collect the fuel again. don't run the car, so the fuel doesn't drip on hot exhaust......

we bit the bullet not seeing any apparent problems. Put in a new gas tank and fuel pump while we were there. 160 bucks for the tank, 90 bucks for a new walbro 190.

took the tank and filled it with water, boom..all the little drips showed up, including one under the strap!

Re: Help with leaking gas tank!

Thats what I have been thinking the problem was but he said when he looked at it when it was coming out, it was coming from somewhere on the top of the tank.

Being a 91 though I would like to replace the tank just in case. Where did you get yours at? I already have a 255 walbro intake so I would just switch everything over.

Re: Help with leaking gas tank!

my brother in law ordered it from Rockauto.com.

fit pretty nicely. it came with it's own gas cap, which is kind of crappy, but the factory one didn't fit, so he's stuck using it. comes with new sealing rubber ring and collar.
