Fuel Gauge

Ok Im trying to find out the name of the "thing" that goes in my gas tank that determines the level of fuel. In other words my gas tanks always says fuel and Im trying to find out the name of that sensor. Im told its in the tank and that thats my problem. I was told its called a "fuel level sensor", but I cant find anything under that name on any sites like Autozone.

Re: Fuel Gauge

It is called a "fuel tank sending unit" and you probably will have to order it from a special place. Depending on your application, you might have to dig deep into your wallet. I know that for a 1996 firebird, the sending unit costs around $600. I would drop the tank and check power, and if something stupid might be wrong. Good Luck.

Re: Fuel Gauge

Yeah I just looked into it and its just shy of 200$ for my car. My only worry is that that may not be it though thats what I was told it is. I dont have the means to lower the tank and check it out myself. So Im kinda stuck here. I dont wanna buy that part and have that not be the problem.

You should try shorting the sender wire to ground. If the gauge and wiring is good, it should go to E. The other thing to try is grounding the tank and see if the gauge starts working.
