Looking for the best replacement chevy 350 under $1200

Lately I've been looking for a Chevy 350 to replace my worn out 305. I've have been doing my research and have found many reman motor out there. I need help finding a 350 that will be a perfect fit replacement for my camaro, One where I can swap all the TPI parts onto. There are so many rebuilt 350's for sale, but I am afraid of buying one that is not a perfect fit.

Re: Looking for the best replacement chevy 350 under $1200

I'm afraid you're not going to find anything worth swapping into your car for $1200. There are $1200 engines out there, but I wouldnt use them as a boat anchor.

You might find something used for $1200, but you'll spend more having it checked out to make sure its good.

For an '89 IROC-Z, make sure you get a later model roller-cam engine. They will cost more, but the benefits far outweigh the extra cost.

Re: Looking for the best replacement chevy 350 under $1200

keep looking for a used rebuilt 350 with no miles,,,,, alot of times guys will build em and never install for whatever reason, I guarantee itll take awhile but its worth it when you find a great deal...... check craigslist in your area,, dont buy something on the internet you cant inspect your self.... I took me 8-10 months of looking almost everyday but I ended up finding deal of a lifetime.... 355, polished and chamfered crank, new bearings and freezeplugs, 4 bolt mains with x rods, forged pistons, new water pump, timing chain, oil pump, xe268 cam with lifter(non roller) sfi flywheel , 601 heads with new valves, valve job, seals and springs,,,, for $300 ... there out there if you look diligently.

There's always a 4 bolt GM roller 350 short block from Summit $679.oo then add a Eagle rotating assembly (stroker) for 900.oo +. Of course there's always the nickle and dime things that will add up...... But you can re-use all of your accessories/ oilpan etc.....

Something to think about my

I think you can buy new L05 shortblocks for somewhere in the $1,200 range.

Here's the link, $1,250. Use your heads with 1.94/1.6 valves, port them.
Score a ZZ4 take out cam for about $125.

Looks good. Right now I am trying to look for that chevy 350 short block roller motor for around $600-700 on summit. Would my 305 heads be alright to use?

Umm, I think he meant to say BARE block. $6-700 is just too cheap for a new, complete, quality shortblock.

Don't use crappy engine remanufacturers. The engines are assembled by minimum wage crack smokers. On top of that, the one they show for YOUR car has swirl choke heads.

Re: Looking for the best replacement chevy 350 under $1200

this would be the one I would get. best price/components.

get a bigger roller cam and either a carb vortec intake/tbi adapter, a tpi lower base, or a tbi vortec manifold (depending on your fueling choice), and get rollin'.

I think I will be ordering this one when time comes. It has FREE SHIPPING!!!!!! I'll buy some rebuilt L98 heads or some after market heads then install a supercharger cam to put in.

Make sure you double check that. shipping may be free but the motor is freight and Ive never heard of that being free. Just make sure. Also, fyi, a factory 4 bolt
|| || is alot weaker than an aftermarket 4 bolt \| |/ and a 2 bolt has ben used to build 400hp+ many times with good results. Just my cause if your ordering new and paying top dollar, you could get the same block with a 2 bolt main for less $ and always convert it years later if needed.

I bought this motor and it is awesome. http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...33108103304.58

Huge improvement over stock with new 3" exhaust and shift kit. All said and done (shipping, core charge, etc.) it was $1,700. You would be very happy with it. And talk about direct swap ... it doesn't get more direct than this. And if the dude that put mine together was on the pipe and screwed something up, it's got a 7-yr. warranty so it will be replaced.

I'm glad you're happy with it, and that's a good price/warranty. Nice car by the way!

However, what did the piston to wall clearances check at? Rod bearing clearance?????Thrust clearance???????

What are the cam specs????? Head casting #'s???

These are some of the things I have to know to determine whether or not I'll be happy with an engine. The only way to know these clearances for sure is to check them yourself, and if you're going to do that, you may as well build it yourself, that's what I do.

Most reman places DON'T check much at all, use crappy TBI grind cams, and crappy TBI swirl choke heads.

The engine linked in your post IS advertised as a TBI engine at least.... Some of the reman places falsely advertise that same engine as a TPI replacement. I think I had this exact same long block in my old 87 IROC. (It was in there when I bought it)
