good cam?

gotta early style vortec TPI 355 mild port and polish. and was wondering if this cam would yeild good results. but my main question comes in with the lobe seperation of bein 110. because it seems like all the FI cams are 114 lobe sep. would that lobe sep diffrence screw with any of the TPI?? Re: good cam?

probly gonna want to get it tuned up. what year car is this? is it maf controlled?

MAF will handle alot of cams without too much problem. I got a big cam on a tight LSA (109lsa) and its runnign good in open loop mode, had some minor difficulty with closed loop but with more time i think i can get it down.

for a mild 355, you cant go wrong with comp cams 502 grind...its a 218/224. it will need tuned tho to get most out of it as with any modification. speed density will want a tune as well since its more finicky

Re: good cam?

ya its a speed density. its a 90 camaro 350 TPI in an 92 S10. had the same combo runnin in it already but wiped out the main bearings so had to tear it apart. and was wonderin while i had it apart if i wanted to swap the stick out. but it had idle issues and was wondering if the lobe sep could be to blame. but i hadnt had it tuned either so i guess soon as i get the money up ill get it tuned. but the dude wanted 300$ for a basic tune. and if it takes more then an hour then its 100$ an hour after that.

Re: good cam?

112-114 lsa's for most cams under 220 degrees intake duration will be easy idling. For duration under 218 you could get away with tighter lsa's, stuff in the 108-112 range could work. takes abit of tuning thats for sure but you could get it to work. o2 constants help. i had trouble getting my cam to work on my 383 but i'm not that great with tuning just yet it was close but some minor tweaks will be needed to be perfect.

For mostly stock TPI you dont wanna go to much higher than 218 degrees duration on intake. Actually lingenfelters 211/219 cam, TPIS's zz9 212/226 and comps 501 at 212/218 are nice mild cams.

I wouldnt be hesitant to run the 218/224 comp 502 cam but will need heads worked over abit to handle the lift. Its on a 112lsa but you can get one on a 110 that will work and give nice lopey sound. but for ease of tuning 112 is fine.

if you dont wanna do that head work stuff or shim it up, crane has a nice 214/220 cam that will work on stock heads with new springs 2032 i think it is. powermax grind

Re: good cam?

ya its a stock TPI with some plenum portin. took a little bit out of runners but not much can be takein there. gasket matched the intake and opened it a little bit up top but mainly just polished everything nicely. the heads are early vortecs with 1.94-1.5 stainless, swirled and undercut a bit of bowl work and there set for the cam i have right now. i work at a machine shop so that part aint a problem. but for my combo would you recommend a cam with a larger LSA. and a smaller duration, because the one i got is 224in. 230ex. once again thanks

Re: good cam?

the cam i have requires no tuning.... would it help... sure... but it can go in a completly stock tpi and stock heads... but i would recommend stronger springs than stock to go with this cam oh and crane also recommends a adjustable fuel regulator also....

Re: good cam?

not to hijack your thread, but im wanting to do the same thing...i had my 350 tpi maf rebuilt 5k miles back and i just did an auto/t5 swap...the engine is stock...im looking for something that doesnt need a lot of tune and that wont be too much for the T5(i heard too much torque could wreck a t5)...would you recommend that powermax for my application as well?

Re: good cam?

yeah powermax is a great stock to mild modded motor with mild heads like stockers or mild ported stockers. its a great street grind and does make good power. The stock L98 cam makes good enough power to do bottom 13's all day long in the right car. I've hit 12.95 with it in superb weather conditions. powermax would really open up the car if you do some TPI bolt ons to get alittle more topend flow.

i think you will like it and it should require no tuning at all except maybe some base timing adjustment, give it 2-3 degrees advance over stock and maybe play with fuel pressure.

Re: good cam?

yeah hopefully i will run 12 seconds with my mods... but i think stock the l98 is too much for the t5 thats why there were no l98/t5 combos.... but yeah the powermax 2032 is great.. i have alot more top end.. but thats because all my tpi parts are fully ported and aftermarket..... the only thing i need now is some decent heads... does anyone know of some budget aftermarket
Aluminum heads that will perform much better than the stock l98 heads....

Re: good cam?

only budget aluminum heads i really know of are patriot heads that you can get on ebay for like 800-900 complete. They are 1206 ports tho which is larger than TPI bases so that kinda sucks. You'll have to port match alot if its even possible to open the base to 1206

for a few hundred more bucks your in brodix/dart/trickflow range. another 100-200 bucks is AFR range

Re: good cam?

well which afr heads would be good for a 383 highflow tpi... i love tpi and i dont wanna change the intake setup... i have no need for topend power.... also what cam would be good to go with this new setup.... would the powermax 2032 cam be fine for the 383....
