Re: Camshaft Question...

why not just get a comp cams kit for the same price just about for better quality and you could probably go with a bit bigger cam that one is pretty small.

Re: Camshaft Question...

Summit gets their camshaft kits from either Comp or Crane. Yes that's a fine cam for a mild 305 TPI flat-tappet engine.

Thanks for the info, I noticed the comp/crane sets are a little on the pricey side, just want a little more pull out of her nothing drastic.

Re: Camshaft Question...

well it depends. if your using stock heads you have to stay small. i put in new springs which your suppossed to do with an upgraded cam that raised the clearance .050 just enough so i could fit a zz4 cam in. in the end with rockers i was running .506 intake and .510 exhaust lifts. and i think duration was 212 and 220 and lobe seperation 112. look up zz4 i liked that cam but like i said you need to clearance your lift for it plus youll need to find a similar because a zz4 is roller cam.

I have used this cam (or rather one with the same specs) in a 283, two 350's and a 400, all carbed. IMO it is a great cam and a very good choice for your 305, considering what you are looking for. It was a bit limiting for the 400 I used it in but.....the vehicle had 3.08 gears in it and so I choose this cam to enhance the power in the lower RPM range because of the gears, and it worked great!!! I can't comment on how it will idle in your 305, but I would assume similar to a 350 because they have the same stroke. In a 350 it will NOT lope, but it will give you great low speed torque, decent fuel economy, and be very streetable. I'm currently putting together a 350 TPI motor that will more than likely use this cam kit from summit.

Re: Camshaft Question...

ok, im putting aluminum corvette heads #113's on the 305, they came off a zz3 motor that was never ran. I intend to use this setup on a tpi setup. I dont want nothing crazy yet as i am new to all of this, i just want a nice starting point so i can get the tpi running and maybe go into prom burning. the summit cam seems decent, anyone else have any info to add on this?

It states it's for a 85/86 TPI 305, will it also fit an 89 305 TPI stock engine?

I dont see why not, all the TPI motors were the same with the exception of little changes here and there. Anyone else have any info?

the only real difference in the years of the motors was slight cam adjustments and early blocks were flat tappet while later ones were roller cam.

Its not a roller cam, so it will only work in >= 1986 SBC motors. It works great in my 305, slightest touch of lope with a slow idle, over 700rpm you can't hear any lope, tam, and good power to 5500rpm (thats with a carb, TPI will die off before then.) Should play nice with an unmodded computer.

No, that's a flat-tappet cam and you want a roller cam. The benefits of a roller cam far outweigh the higher price.

Any roller cam suggestions (part number, etc) for a stock 89 305 TPI.
This is going to be a winter project when I will also be installing Hooker 2055'S and a Hooker cat back system,

After doing a search on the TPI board it looks like Comp cams part # 08-300-8 is the cam I need.
Anyone using this cam with their stock 305's?

Re: Camshaft Question...

I cant recommend a cam for a stock engine. You have to remove so many parts to get to it, that you should replace them rather than reinstall them. I'm referring to things like the timing chain, the intake manifold, the valve springs and valve stems seals, etc. Its just not worth it to do just a cam swap in my opinion. Save your money and do everything at once. Or build up another engine with all the good stuff, and swap that in when you're ready.

I want to keep it a #'s matching car so headers and cat back come first, then new heads, cam and a intake....sucks not being rich!

I see what your saying but I just re-did my top-end, just didnt have the money to throw a cam in when I had it all apart, and I'm not really planning a "build" just want cam it and get a little more power. Thanks for all the replies, I'll let everyone know how it works out.
