removing gaskets

ok i have done a search and found nadda, i have a TPI intake setup that i bought that is in fairly decent shape, its my goal to clean all the gunk out of it and then install in on my car, now i have taken the whole setup apart and found that there is still quite a bit of gasket material still left on the runners, TB, etc... its stuck on there pretty good and want to see if anyone has any suggestions on how to take it off without using a razor or something else that WILL damage the aluminum. I heard somewhere that 3M makes a little sand disc (yellow i believe) that does this with out damaging the aluminum and thats worth a shot if i can ever find some, but some of the pieces still have the whole thickness of the gasket on it in chunks and its on there like white on rice any ideas?

Re: removing gaskets

I would say the best way to remove the gaskets is to use a flexible putty knife. If you take your time and slide it down the surface gently, you shouldn't gouge any of the material. I think the sanding disks could do more damage. Little scratches in the surface aren't going to affect anything once the new gaskets are in place.

Re: removing gaskets

some parts stores sell an aerosol can of "gasket remover" it softens the gaskets and you can scrape them off easily, just spray the stuff on and set a piece of trash bag on it so it doesnt evaporate as quickly and do it sevral times, and you will be set

Re: removing gaskets

try soaking it in laquer thinner, and if that doesnt work go to your local hardware store and get some jasco paint and epoxy remover that stuff is so strong that itll peel the mucus from your nostrils
