Top end upgrades, where to start?
Hey guys,
I rebuilt my 350 last winter so the block is all good. all new internals.
Id like to build my top end up this year round.
Does any one have any advice on where to start and what to use, such as names and sizes. (ie: cams, intakes, TB's etc etc) any computer work to be done?
Id really appreciate the help. the whole TPI is new to me althought ive had this car for 2 years. Just not sure where to go form here.
Thanks guys, if you need to know any info then please let me know.
Its an '87 350...

Re: Top end upgrades, where to start?
there are all kinds of top end upgrades you can look into.
if u want crazy power look into a Holley Stealth ram, an Accell Super Ram or a TPIS Miniram.
or you could just upgrade your tpi base intake with an edelbrock or accell high flow base.
Slp runners or TPIS intake runners are also an easy HP gain.
id also go with a throttle body upgrade (BBK 52mm or 58mm)
idk, there are all kinds of things you can do. you just have to research what is within your budget.

Don't waste your time with a TB upgrade unless you go to more CI. They use the same throttle body on the 502 ram jet, so you think you need more air? Its not necessary, unless your running more than a 383 to high r's or a supercharged setup.
Look at a HSR setup, with fuel line and adaptor fittins, it comes to around $680, then go to 1.6 roller rockers, they run the oil temp 35* cooler, and add some duration to the cam, and make it behave like its bigger. The HSR is good for 35 hp on a stock motor, while roller rockers are good for a conservative rating of 12hp. Also getting a adjustable fuel pressure regulator, will make it more torqy and add some hp. Check out my page, and see what I did to my '87 TPI 350 Iroc-z and see what I did. After I put my headers on it, and took it to the track, I started at a 15.1 @ 89mph and 11 runs later, I had the car to a 13.81 @ 99mph, that was before I even touched the rear suspension, so check it out.

Those mods aren't for a wheelie monster, just up to 400hp, which keeps up with ls1's. I've seen a TPI, that popped wheelies, but only ran around
12.10's so, They're just cheap stuff, to make more power. I wouldn't buy SLP runners, there like $300 that HSR intake is not that much money for more power but if its for a camaro, it will be perfect, but for a firebird, then you'll have to cut out some of the bracing out of the hood supports.

the biggest thing I would recommend if you still have your stock exhaust is to buy a new one. Dyno dons sells the best for us. Check it out. Other than that, my old setup I had a TPIS mini ram and a zz9 camshaft along with some aluminum edelbrock heads 2.02/1.60 and made 300 rwhp. The whole setup along with the headers and y pipe cost only 2k. Very easy setup to install. Oh yeah I would also install a lower temp thermostat like a 180 or even a 160. Whatever you choose

Thats funny, my buddy with his bone stock LT1, with longtube hookers, a moroso CAI, dleteq direct ignition, stock thermo stat, a tune, good plugs and wires, he was able to crank out 323rwhp, on a stock motor, he also had rear gears, all rear suspension and subframe connectors, he's a 275 lb'r and he cranked a 13.1 at 104 mph. So me, a 165lb'r would have run in the 12's.
The thermo is good for 3 hp.
