SLP customer service = wtf?!

OK so I called SLP to order a new set of gaskets for my high flow aluminum SLP runners and see if they could do a better turnaround time than summit or Jegs.

The customer service rep comes on the phone and you can tell by his tone of voice and his demeanor that hes either having a bad day or hes a real tool. I tell him what I need and he then refers me to go to my local GM dealer and order a stock set of gaskets because theirs, "were never different in size".

Does this sound right to you? It sure doesn't sound right to me. I'm looking for these things to port match my plenum.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

The ones that came with my runners were not bigger around then stocks. I was told from someone on this board to order some AS&M gaskets from TPIS. They dont have the greatest customer service either, but I got them.

BTW, I responded to your port size opening post with a picture. I am ahead of you by about 2 weeks on about the same project.

Make sure you port your base. The SLP's will actually hurt your performance tell the base is ported to match.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

I'm not gonna bother to port the base.

I can deal with a few HP loss for the time being.

What I'm doing is port matching the plenum to the runners and getting everything ready for the 58mm Holley throttle body and the Edelbrock TPI base. I figure It'd be a waste to do all that port work on the base and then turn around and buy the edelbrock a couple months later.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

Understand on spending time porting something you plan on pulling off later. In that case, I wouldnt even waist my money on some gaskets or time pulling it apart. Put it on all at once.

But I would order the gaskets from tpis. Very good tip from whoever.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

Eh. I'll buy the gaskets for now as a guide to the port job.

I think $20 - $30 for 2 - 3 months use isn't a big deal. BTW, porting is looking good on your end.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

Understand on using them as a guideline. Just remember, they are actually for runners you dont have, so they wont match up just right. But they do clear everything.

Forgot to mention in the one pic with many gaskets laid out...
The gray one is stock felpros.
The black is slp
The bigger gray is tpis/asm

Thanks for compliment. First time I have messed with porting something out.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

If what you just said holds true, then it looks like the SLP gaskets really are bigger than stock and the guy on the phone was BS'ing.

I can see where the AS&M gaskets would be bigger than the SLP's because SLP runners are 1.600 and AS&M are 1.660 if I have my numbers right. (I am referring to the plenum to runner gasket as it does indeed look like the runner to base gasket is the same size. Correct me if I am wrong.)

BTW I've attached pictures of the first pair of runner ports i ported and the plenum all cleaned up. It was horrible. Look at the photos with all the black gunk in it for the before pictures.

I am refuring to this picture here..

http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/2273/img4062750fw7.jpg

The center of the 3(at the bottom of the screen) is the slp one. It is the same diameter as the one above it which is stock felpro gaskets. I can get exact measurements tommorow night if you like. I am busy tonight(woot, concert).

Looks like you had something leaking? Or is that oil blowback built up on the inside?

I was referring to the plenum to runner gasket only as the runner to base is clearly the same size as stock.

I think something was clogged or messed up for the plenum to be that bad.

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

I didnt picture the plenium to runner gasket in the slp format. It was badly damaged upon removal. But it was the same size as stock as well.

Hopefully your car will run better being all cleaned up!

I'm a bit confused by this. So in the picture the gray plenum to runner gasket was a stock felpro and the black plenum to runner was an AS&M?

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

The two up top, with the 4 holes... Plenium to Runner.
1 is stock felpro
1 is ASM
NO SLP!!!

On the bottom, ones with 2 holes, runner to base.
Top is felpro
middle is SLP
bottom is ASM

Re: SLP customer service = wtf?!

Ah gotcha.

So the 2nd plenum to runner gasket (the black one) is AS&M, and the third runner to base gasket (grey one) is AS&M also.

Whats the big fuss about gaskets over?

They are simple cardboard, easily cut with a knife
