What's a good intake paint?
I'm looking to paint my plenum, runners, and base when I buy the edelbrok high flow.
What is a GOOD paint to use that will stand up to the environment and temps of an engine?
I'm looking to do a base coat of gloss black and red highlights and then top it off when a nice shiny clear.
I don't have any fancy equipment or a place to do it so although I knowit isnt the best route to take, are there any recommended rattle can products out there?

Just wondering if this:

And It's recommended clearcoat would be a good choice.

Paint could be a pain in the butt cause it might chip and peel if not done right. Sorry, can't help you with this subject cause I don't know. What I can tell you is that you could polish your intake parts to a brillant shine and I think that it would look better that way, anyway. Just my opinion, get other opinions, especially Senior Members.

It was sitting for 10 years and someone before me painted the intake black it it was all coming off and looked really bad..I also bought the valve covers on ebay and sandblasted and painted them to...nothing fancy just wanted it to look alittle more factory thats all.

Re: What's a good intake paint?
I have a TBI intake that I just had powder coated. It looks phenomenal. It is called "mirror finish" with a clear over it. Cost me $65. It was a new Edelbrock TBI #3704. I have seen others paint their TPI/TBI intakes and it's a 50/50 shot whether it will hold or not. My previous manifold was blasted, primed and painted using the best stuff out there and it lasted about 6 months.
The powder coating should last years and cleans up with a rag when you get it dirty.
SOme say that painting/coating an aluminum intake can trap the heat and you can loose a little hp. I have seen no issues.
With my new project I am having almost everything powder coated. Pulleys, brackets, intake, tbi, injector pod, coil bracket, throttle cable bracket, etc. The only reason is due to ease of cleaning and protecting my investment. It was a total of $350 to have it all done.
I also spent about $60 to replace all the nuts, bolts, screws with stainless.

Re: What's a good intake paint?
Get a quote on powder coating all of that and any brackets that you have to remove during the process. loss black looks the best on brackets. It would look awesome to have your runners a different color than the rest of your intake. Gloss black and gloss red look awesome. Silver tends to look more "painted" than the rest of the colors for some reason.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: What's a good intake paint?
what about good clear coats? i would love to paint my satin bar aluminum HSR that i have polished slightly on the top rails so it doesnt oxide... but ive heard all the rattle can clears turn it yellow and flake off. i have had experience with VHT brake caliper clear which turned yellow and flaked off. as well as POR15 clear that just flaked off a well. ive heard bad things about engine enamel clear that does the same.. i tried it on my aluninum heads and it does turn it alil yellow tint. so wat are the good clears as well?

Re: What's a good intake paint?
To be honest with you I have not seen a clear that works well in the engine compartment other than a clear powder coat. It's unfortunate, but true!

What about cleaning up the plenum and runners and runners really good and then hitting it with that high temp gloss black epoxy paint I posted?

Re: What's a good intake paint?
Well, the worst case scenario is it will not last. Remember that regular paint still chips and scratches, etc. Not a whole lot of investment in going that route. You can always take it back off if it doesn't work and then have it re-done, but I am one who advocates "save time, save money".
The great thing about powder coating is its durability. IF it scratches you can buff it out and it lasts a long time!
