Car died on me while driving - code 43

Hi,

I was out driving last Saturday and while driving home I was sitting at about 60mph on the freeway when the engine just died. Pulled it over and tried to restart it. It turned over and would catch for about a second or two then die again. I opened the hood and after checking some wires went as started it again and it fired right up. Later that hight after about 10 minutes from a cold start it happened again. Opened the hood and ater about 10 minutes it started as normal.

I checked for codes and got a code 43 today messing about with it in the driveway. after about 10 minutes or so of running it in the drive way it happened again. Same thing, leave it to cool and it restarted.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this as a car that can only rum for 10 minutes isn't of much use. I have a friend with an 89 Trans Am who keeps a lot of new spares so I have the opportunity to try swapping out some parts with new ones if I know which ones to swap.

Car is an 87 LB9 Auto.

Thanks,

Robert

Re: Car died on me while driving - code 43

Best guess has a few symptoms like mine had a while back... a BAD gaseous weird fuel smell while running and intermittent roughness on idle. Always got better or worse just after a fillup at the gas pump. Had to be one of three things I changed out... plug wires, ignition module and dizzy cap. I believe it was the pickup coil in the ig mod but while I was there jus did the wholesale fix. Did it on mine. Hope that helps!!

I'll pull the cap off and check the contacts at the weekend and swap out the module while I'm at it.

Appart from also checking the knock sensor wiring, anyone got any other ideas?

My 89 z28 did that and I found out it was the ground on the right fender by the battery. Don't ask me why it did that, but that was all it was.

I'll check the ground and the coil and see where that takes me. It's an external coil so it's a pretty quick thing to swap out.

pull the coil out check the resistance between the bat and tach terminals. it should be very close to zero, around .7 and lower. then check the secondary terminal which is where that little spring thingy sits, and the tach terminal. it should not be infinite. then the ground and the secondary terminal. if both are infinite, replace. if not its fine.
