EGR Switch and 160 Thermostat

I was wondering if the use of a 160 degree thermostat to make the engine run cooler would result in the EGR switch coming on less? I read up on what this switch does by releasing exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to cool the combustion down to reduce Nitrogen Oxides. The switch also does not come on at idle and wide open throttle. Ideally we would want this switch to come on the least amount of time I would think. What do others think?

Re: EGR Switch and 160 Thermostat

Very timely post... During my investigation of a recent "no start" incident, I found a wire. It was hooked to the EGR valve and I also wonder what good it is. My 350 has been running for two years with no issue until last month's breakdown. Apparently, a "Painless Wiring" engine harness does not include the emission wiring or I'd have hooked it up. Just like you, BC, I'm wondering if I should hook to pin C15 or leave it be. Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated.

Re: EGR Switch and 160 Thermostat

THERMOSTATS DO NOT LOWER ENGINE TEMPERATURES, there ONLY job is to force and engine to warm up. its best to leave the stock ones in 160s are just a waste of money....also EGR systems only work during steady cruise situations therefor robbing u of no hp when u need it why **** with it? when ur cruising around its lowering ur emissions if its functioning properly leave it alone..........

Actually it's a bimetal switch heated by exhaust gases not coolant. It's only a diagnostic sensor as such doesn't determine how much EGR signal is applied to the EGR valve. Lower cylinder temps reduce conditions for detonation which affects engine performance.
