EGR Valve & Solenoid Delete Help???
Ok so my EGR Valve decided to take a dump on me a little bit ago, and now my solenoid just went to...So I have the EGR Valve Block-Off Plate, but how do i go about removing or deleting the EGR Solenoid...Because every now and then try to turn, and it just makes this horrible sound, and then the SES Light comes on, so how would i go abotu getting rid of the EGR Solenoid for go or so that it will not longer power on? Also if anyone knows where I can get a new owners manual for a 91 Z28 or atleast the Fuse Panel Layout page would be appreciate it.
Re: EGR Valve & Solenoid Delete Help???
You can't delete EGR and still pass smog in Cali. If you want to delete it anyway, you need to delete it in the chip program, I think. You might get it past the smog tech because the egr is hidden under and kind of behind the plenum, especially if you still have the decorative plate that GM installed on the back of the Plenum. If you get a smog tech that goes through some sort of check-off list for the visual, you had better have the egr installed. If you can block it off so it doesn't function and eliminate it from the chip so it doesn't set an ses light, you might get away with it. The egr does reduce nox emissions in partial throttle mode, exactly the mode that the standard smog test produces, so you may find that you fail to get your nox numbers down where they should be.

Re: EGR Valve & Solenoid Delete Help???
I think GM has discontinued the factory egr valve and solenoid for our cars and it is no longer available. One of the guys in the club has nstalled a First unjection base on his car and the factory egr was too big to fit under the plenum. He found a Ford unit that bolted in and worked. Basically, you need an egr solenoid that is open/closed, not a variable one like the 4th gen cars use. All I can say is either look in a "bone yard" for a used one, or take your old one to an auto parts store and see if you can look at other units to compare and see what might work.
Re: EGR Valve & Solenoid Delete Help???
I thought I had a bad egr solenoid, so I checked at Kragen while I was out. The egr valves are available from Kragen, but the price is $118.00. Turns out I don't think I need one. I posted on the So Cal board that I had a code 32 set, and Dyno Don said that was an egr code for low back pressure. The bolts between the cat and the intermediate pipe had fallen out, so I suspect that having the exhaust system wide open from the cat back probably dropped the back pressure.

Before you buy an EGR valve from an auto parts store, take it out of the box and check it. Press on the diaphragm and then put your finger over the hole. The diaphragm should stay put. If it opens again, the valve is bad. I've seen them bad right out of the box.
