Dying at idle
Hello. Yesterday I purchased a 1986 Iroc-Z with the 305 tpi. I know it's the "slow" Iroc, but it sure is a lot faster than my 1980 Eldorado! I really like the car, but it has a few issues.
Last night I was out with a friend, driving around in the new car. It stalled once when I was going to pull out into traffic. It stalled later again as I was doing around 10 mph making a turn around. It stalled once again tonight. The car runs great, with plenty of power, but it wants to stall at idle. It has 106,000 miles with a new short block that has no more than 5,000 miles on it. I have found a crappy vacuum line that's back near the distributor that I will probably replace tomorrow. Any ideas on what could cause this?
The previous owner said that it could use a good tune-up. So far, I have purchased a new distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, and a fuel filter. I have installed the cap and rotor, but I'm having trouble installing the wires and plugs
. Do you guys have any tips for those on this car?
I'm sorry to just kind of barge in and ask questions, but I'd like to get her operating a little better. I think I'm going to get around 10 mpg this tank. I know it's not an economy car, but 10 is my own fault
. The car sat for a while. I plan on hanging around and checking out the forum! I really like my new Camaro.
Thanks for your help,
Dan

Re: Dying at idle
Hello. I appreciate your help. It usually idles at around what looks like 750, but it will sometimes drop to around 500 and feel like it will stall. To keep it from stalling, I rev it a bit, but then it goes to around 1000 rpm and doesn't want to go back down very quickly. Besides that, it runs great.
Well, actually the harmonic balancer spun off today. Yesterday I was hearing a metallic knock type of noise at certian lower rpms. Today, I started hearing a clank clank and found that harmonic balancer (or damper) was just going back and forth, hitting the timing cover and the balancer pulley. I ordered a new one and I am going to pick it up on Friday. Do I need some kind of installer to install it? I have a puller that should suffice. Also, does this balancer need to be balanced in any way, or should it be good to go? The car is sitting until I can fix it.
How do I clean/adjust the iac? It's not that I don't know how to work on cars, but this car seems quite a bit different than my Eldorado. I really appreciate your help and I apologize for all the questions.
