I deleted the tensioner as well and now the battery keeps going dead. Is it impossible to tighten the serp belt so it doesn't slip on the alt. without a tensioner? ('87 TPI )
Thanks

More than likely not. The tensioner also compensates for belt stretch.

I've done it but it requires some modification to the bracket holding the alternator so it will have some adjustment. You'll need about an inch of adjustment and it will probably still be tough to get the belt on & off - but not impossible.

I have no pics. I only ran that way for 1 - 2 years, then switched to v-belts.
You would have to slot one of the bolt holes ( in the bracket ) into a curved shape.
If your bracket doesn't allow, then look for a different bracket in a salvage yard.
If your bracket is one large piece for multiple accessories then you may have to cut out the part for the alternator and use something different if unable to slot a hole for adjustment.
