adding some ponys :)

i have a 91 z28 305TPI 5 speed. it has a 3inch cat back exhaust. i know i need headers yes. i want to cam it but im not sure on what one. any sugestions. about 350 to spend. i was told i should get new lifters as well? please gimme some feedback. thx

You always need new lifters when replacing the cam. Using the old lifters that are worn in to the old cam will wear out your new cam in a hurry. As you said you have a fairly good grasp of how to get more power out of it. I have an LT4 cam in mine and it def woke the car up. But then again i have intake work, headers, full exhaust...basically everything one can have without pulling the heads off or supercharging it.

you dont ALWAYS need new lifters. since your car is a 91, it should have a roller cam in it, which means that you can get a cam that is taylored too use the standard roller lifters without buying new ones. if you get a roller cam kit with both lifters and cam, then there goes your 350 unless you find one second-hand.

ive got a 91 firebird formula 305 LB9 tpi and im gonna be doing a rebuild in short order, as well as cam swap, roller rockers, springs, ported intake/heads, and headers to round out my car. we basically have the same setup in different cars: essentially stock with catbacks.

neway, if its a roller, you dont necessarily need new lifters unless stated by the manufacturer, so you can probably get a cam and use your old roller lifters. if its a flat tappet (i.e.- u wouldnt be stock) then you should always get new lifters with the camshaft, cuz the lifters are worn to that specific camshaft as stated. hope that helps!

depends on what your looking to get out of your car. i just ordered a cam from another member on here, its an LT1-B cam that came out of a crate LT1 and specs like so:

Int/Exh: 192*/196* @ .050 Lift
Lift: .420/.430 w/ 1.5:1 rockers
Lift: .448/.459 w. 1.6:1 rockers (what im going with)
LSA: 111*

in my opinion its not huge, just better than stock so it should prove quite helpful. but like i said, it all depends on what you want out of your car. street cars dont wanna go too big usually, especially our 305's with stock heads, they suck for flow. if you plan on getting better heads or adding some other big pieces later, get all the parts so they match eachother when all combined, then put them on at once. that way you lessen the work and you get everything you want at one time. plus you save on tuning costs. talking with a cam company rep. can really help you pick the right cam for your application too.

i cant see going with a huge cam for a 305 unless its fully built, in which case i would ask "WTF? why not just go 350/383?" but its all in preference i guess. so in saying that i wouldnt go huge, i cant see any durations over 200 or a 305 cam, and probably not much more lift than .460-.465. cuz then your just defeating your purpose. neway, hit back and let everyone know what your looking at, ppl always got opinions for products!
