Fuel Pump
Hello All,
I'm not sure if this is the right spot to put this, but my fuel pump recently went out. I'm still running TBI, but want to switch to TPI. I know the pump has to be changed out, so can I still run TBI with the higher pressure TPI pump in place? or will i have to replace it again when I switch to tpi?
Thanks,
Click

Re: Fuel Pump
I'm going with the door I think. I don't have a lift, so dropping the rear would be near impossible.
so it just dropped in the same way? no extra modifications needed?

Re: Fuel Pump
the fuel lines in your TBI car is made to only handle 15 PSI, you need to remove the rubber hoses and replace them with Fuel Injection rated hose at the very least, unless you WANT a fire. i personally would just replace the whole line, you can get the whole line pre formed from www.inlinetube.com i miss anything? chime in if i did lol

Re: Fuel Pump
I know I'll eventually have to switch the lines, but does it matter as long as I have my TBI still running? because otherwise wouldn't the extra PSI be slightly harmful to the TBI unit, or it'd have to be modified, right?

Re: Fuel Pump
once you have that high pressure pump in those lines MUST be changed or they will burst, and i do not for see any issues with the much PSI in the TB, but i would put an AFPR on there for safety

Re: Fuel Pump
well with your stock TBI fuel pressure regulator your pressure will still only be 12-15psi, but once you upgrade to TPI then the new regulator will up the pressure and you will need to replace the rubber hoses
Also on a related topic, I am wondering if a fuel pump from a late model chevy truck or SUV (with at least a 350) would work in a TBI to TPI swap? I'm about to swap my 305 tbi for a 350 TPI and I can find these pumps everywhere for cheap. I'm assuming it will work with some mods to make it fit, but wanna double check

Re: Fuel Pump
with the hassle, and fail rate of oem, why not just put a new one in for the work?
And so there is something in place stock that will reduce the fuel pressure?
I by no means want to run anything higher than stock pressure, but I'd really like to not have to buy two pumps and I'd prefer to do the lines when I do the rest of the swap.
EDIT: and I'm thinking about this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/255LP...spagenameZWDVW
Seems to be about the same as the walbro for $20 less.
Is it worth it?
And I'd just like to say thank you to everyone that's contributed. I'd like to get my car back on the road :P.

Re: Fuel Pump
if you get a 255 pump for anything that does not need it, and you dont have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator you will run into problems.
Remember when replacing the pump, you will need the strainer, and fuel filter, to keep the warranty valid on the new pump.
