car is hesitating, sputtering and shutting off?

i have a 305 tpi, and i replaced the distributer cap rotor button, tps sensor, idile air control valve, temp sending unit. still hesitates bad and losses alout of power, and somtimes when i stop it will cut off, has a new fuel pump fuel filter also, i cant find no vacum leaks and motor is strong i donu what it can be was throwing a code 24. i reset comp and it dident come back till after i drove it, it gets worse and worse the more i drive it. if i park for 10 min or so runs alright for a few minutes but still missing and then really losses power and starts bucking and stuff so ill shut off and restart and run good again (meaning just missing) and then start sputering and etc... any one help please thanks

Code 24 is the vehicle speed sensor. Does your speedometer work? The computer needs the signal from the VSS in order to make its correct adjustments to the fuel and timing when you are accelerating from a stop, and slowing down to a stop. Without it, the computer is confused and will act like you describe.

The VSS is located in the tailshaft of the transmission, on the driver's side. Your '86 Camaro will have a cable driven speedo, with the cable running up to the dash. Unscrew the cable from the VSS, then unbolt the VSS from the tailshaft. I think its a 10mm nut. Remove the VSS and make sure there is still a plastic gear on the end of it. Then shine a flashlight inside the hole and make sure there is still another plastic gear on the output shaft of the tranny lined up with the hole. If those two gears are not lined up and making contact, the VSS will not work.

Re: car is hesitating, sputtering and shutting off?

the VSS is mounted to the back of the Speedometer, its a magnetic exciter that reads off of the speedo cable, i doubt that would cause a stutter seeing as the the computer will run off of default trims and timing when the code is set, sounds to me as if your tank vent is not working properly, when it starts driving like crap, vent your tank by hand and see if it gets better, (open the gas cap) your tank is probably building too much pressure and your fuel pump has to fight it. (replace your VSS anyways thought, u probably need a new one) sorry kev dont mean top butt in. the actual VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) didnt get mounted to the tailshaft of the trans untill 1993 with the release of the 4L60E. the 700R4 does have provisions for a VSS, but never got one. like i said the sesor itself is bolted on the back of the cluster.

yea ive tried the fuel cap thing. i know the fuel pump was replaced not long ago so tommarow i am gonna check fuel presure and have the mass air flow tested actully im thinkin to heck with it all and just buying a intake and carb and bypass all the electronic bs id save money i belive this way do to the high cost of fuel injection parts

On an 89 and earlier Camaro, and 85 and earlier Firebirds, yes the VSS is mounted to the back of the speedo head in the dash.
But on 90 and newer Camaros, and 86 and newer Firebirds, the VSS is electronic and mounted in the tailshaft of the transmission.

When I said unbolt the VSS from the tailshaft, I meant remove the part that has the plastic speedo gear on it and bolts into the tailshaft, and the cable screws into it. I was wrong to call it a VSS but I cant think of the name.
