1988 GTA 5.7 TPI stalls and dies when foot comes off throttle... will not idle ?
my car did this last year for a few days then it stopped and went back to normal. The problem seems to be back. the car will not run without the foot on the gas. When I remove the foot, it dies out. Usually I just turn the key over and it cranks but now it will not crank without a little throttle either....
It was doing just fine for the past few months but started this again last week or so. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or what the issue could be ?
thanks.

Sounds like the IAC (Idle Air Control) to me. The IAC is basically a controlled vaccum leak that the computer uses to keep the engine running at a constant predetermined RPM. It is also used to increase RPM when things like the AC compressor coming on try to drag the engine RPM down, which could risk stalling the engine. The IAC responds to this by "stepping" in a process called "stall save". How does this affect you?
Well, the IAC is stuck in a position that is too far open, creating too big a vaccum leak, and keeping the engine from starting and/or staying running. The engine dying out when you lift your foot off the throttle is a dead giveaway.
I recommend removing the throttle body and taking out the IAC and TPS. Then clean out all the gunk that has surely built up inside the main body and the various passages. Use carb cleaner, brake cleaner, or parts washing solvent. When the throttle body is clean and dry reassemble it and reinstall the TPS and a new IAC. Use a new gasket between the throttle body and the plenum. Reconnect the wiring, cables, and plumbing (if you're still running coolant through the throttle body that is). You will have to adjust the TPS voltage (check the tech section of this site for a good article on this). Let the engine run and warm up, then go for a drive. Check your idle speed, if it's low or high you can tweak it with the set screw for the throttle stop. You'll have to remove small plug to get access to the screw, which is a torx head (if no one's ever adjusted this before). Do that and you should eb good to go.
