Having strange issues

Ok...so I just got done working on putting my engine back together and started routing the vacuum lines back to the way they were supposed to be(previous owner screwed it all up). Well he had one of the vacuum hoses routed from the intake manifold straight to the brake booster, and had a small section of hose connected to the back of the plenum with a bolt through it...Im guessing to plug the vacuum leak that would have been caused by it not being hooked up. Well this left the PVC valve not hooked up because nothing was going to it.

Well I went to Napa and replaced the vacuum hose and the car ran like crap. Idled very rough and irratic, sputtered on accelleration, ran very rich and generally pissed me off. The funny thing is...the car ran fine all the way to Napa. As soon as I route everything correctly...its falls on its face. So I hook everything back up like it was before and it runs great again. Is it possible that it could be something as simple as the PCV valve being bad?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
