Ok, here's the rundown, I have had a few issues with my '87 for the past 2 weeks.. I thought I had everything figured out, but now a new problem... Here's what is going on..

Car starts no problem.... It runs no problem.. If I were to take off from a light normally, it runs great!!!

If I mat it at the light, it bogs down, radio goes off, SES comes on, let off and it clears itself out and the light goes off....

I have noticed that sometimes it will do it at high acceleration as well, but not as bad...

I have checked my TPS, its set at .55 volts... I have no visual vacuum leaks.

Its wierd that I lose all power?? Could I have a bad TPS, that will read right, but when at WOT, it goes on the blink?? I swapped out my MAF as well, same issue...

Remeber, car runs great, drives great all around town.. As soon as I were to mat it from a stop, it screws up until I let off the gas..

Possible bad fuel filter, I have good pressure..

Do a normal tune-up and change the fuel filter. Also, check that as the throotle opens, the signal voltage from the TPS increases slowly, with no dead spots.

A hesitation like that usually means that you are lean. Maybe its time for a new O2 sensor. Every 3 or 4 years I change out the O2 sensor on my car.

I had this problem way back before I made any mods to my '87. It was the fuel filter.

BTW: a scanner is very helpful in these cases. See if you can borrow one or buy one.

 

The radio going off is of key interest to me, no way a fuel filter can do that. To me it sounds like something is shorting out, causing other electrical issues. Check your TPS for shorts at & near WOT. Or just replace it, they're not that expensive.

 

I'm going to go buy a new TPS tomorrow.. Hopefully that will solve my issue..

Where abouts is the fuel filter located on these cars.. I may replace that as well..

 

Check the codes as if there was a SES light it should have stored a code. Next check to battery terminals and related connections. Kinda sounds like when you go to accelerate hard that could possibly loosen up some power connection.

 

Ive used one of the best code readers and data computers.. It has no codes... I'm going to switch the TPS and fuel filter...

 

the fuel filters are located on the drivers side near the back wheel. if i remember correctly it runs side to side as apossed to forward and back.

 

my car did the same thing under hard acceleration or cornering. check your battery connections. mine was the ground wire connection by the alt bracket

 

What ^^^above said. Clean all the battery terminals extremely well and check the ground to the block. Take sand paper or something and make sure your ground is metal to metal. Check the ground strap to the firewall as well.

Had a problem much like this on a truck. The guy had his ground from the battery hooked to the framerail rather than the block. Well his motor mounts where so bad that the "clamshells" where touching the frame. whenever he would stick it the motor would lift and his motor wouldnt be grounded any more. Always run your ground to the block even with solid motor mounts.

 

you want a permanent fix. get rid of that side terminal and get a top terminal and buy both ground and power wires there only like 15 dollars at autozone . its definitly well worth it in the long run.
