89 Formulas all TPI equipped?

89 Formulas all TPI equipped?
Sorry for the newby question. Looking at an 89 305, however the engine doesn't have the tpi. Guy says it's the original engine, but I thought all 89's had the tpi.
Any help is appreciated.

no, you could get the 305 TPI, 350 TPI or 305 TBI. the TBI will have the large round aircleaner assembly.
It could also be just a base firebird with the 305TBI, people call them formulas all the time.
If the car has the ground effect package it is not a formula.

The '87 Formula's base engine was the LG4 carb.
The '88-'92 Formula's base engine was the LO3 TBI.
The TPI engine was the optional upgrade.
The only f-bodies that TPI was the only engine available was the '90-'92 Z28, Trans Am, and GTA.
