'165 swap problems

I just wired everything in as the tech article specified for the ecm swap from '870 to '165. I must have done somthing wrong because the MAF Burn-off relay is constantly humming when the battery is connected.

It is not surprissing that the car runs like crap. Where should I start? It seems that the relay is reciving voltage all the time when it shouldn't

Re: '165 swap problems

Pull (remove) the relay and see if the engine runs better.

Then voltage check the burn off relay control wire and see if the power is applied at shut off for 1 sec. This relay has constant power (12 VDC) and the ground is switched.

See the attached chart.

Re: '165 swap problems

Damndest thing..... I disconnected the relay, disconnected the battery, looked to make sure the relay wires were going to the right places, then reconnected the battery and no more noise.

The car runs much better now. There are still some other issues, like the speedo, and the fan not turning on, but I will sart some new threads later if I can't figure them out.

Re: '165 swap problems

Sometimes just by removing and replacing the relays, you clean the contacts to make a better connection, it only takes a small piece of dirt or lint.

Removing the battery clears the memory of the ECM, this causes it to relearn the the adjustments. This is the number one electronic troubleshooting cure, place the on/off switch in the off position, wait 1 minute, then return to the on position. This simple operation cures 90% of what is wrong with electronic devices.

If the device has a separate battery power then that has to be removed too.

Computers pick up bad information, this causes all kind of weird symptoms. The master clear, refresh, and reload program rids the system of all this junk.

I am glad you are getting somewhere with your car.

Re: '165 swap problems

Is it possible to just swap the whole wiring harness and ecm from an 86 tpi vehicle into an 85?
