86 z28 Trouble starting

Whenever I park it in a garage it can start right up after sitting for hours. But if I park it in the driveway or outside it has trouble turning over after an hour or two outside. I just bought it two days ago and was wondering if there was something I could do to fix this.

Re: 86 z28 Trouble starting

Gonna need more information than just that. Why won't it start, is the engine turning over but not starting, or is it just not responding when the key is turned on...?

Ideally, it should start the same way, either being in the garage or not. I would check the basics first, make sure the battery cables are secure, all engine grounds tight, ignition wires connected properly, as well as in good condition. Make sure your fuel cap is on (to maintain pressure after the engine is shut down). If the engine is having trouble turning over, it might be a case of heat soak (the starter), so make sure your not overheating. By the way, is the engine fuel injected, or carbed....?

Throw up a picture of the engine bay, and if it's even more possible, can you get a quick video of the condition when it actually takes place, it will help with the diagnosis....

Nice, very clean engine bay! Yes, it's fuel injected....

If you can get a quick video of the condition, we can zero in on it....

She starts right up when cold, and sounds very healthy, good deal....

I'm very curious to hear the condition after only running for a few seconds....

Re: 86 z28 Trouble starting

Give us some more details while we're waiting, did the former owner point out anything that he or she might have added, or removed? Did they mention this scenario at all prior to purchase? Don't worry, its sounds like a very minor thing, I just want to be sure though....

Re: 86 z28 Trouble starting

Very nice engine bay. You should check out my engine bay. I dont have it up yet but it has no engine. HAHAHAHA. Full of dust and spider webs at the moment. good question man. does the engine turn over when you turn the key? do this. have the car camaro where it has trouble starting, remove the air filter housing, spay starting fluid on the air filter, dont soak it, just enough. now try to start the car. it should turn on and stay on. try to turn on the camaro with a full tank of gas. maby when the car is sitting outside for a while, the gas begins to evaporate and build up pressure that it is causing some kind of issue. I really cant figure out what the problem is thou. Can you do me one favor? Here is the distributer that I got for my 86 IROC-Z (picture). Mine is the big cap and my issue is that the cap is so big the the plate that covers the distributer cant be installed. I see that you have an 86 IROC Z, so can you tell me what the casting number is for your small cap distributer? I wnat my engine a soriginal as possible but my big cap is an eye sore. Your distributer does have the 4 pin connector like mine right? Or does it have a seperate coil? Please help me on this one because you are the only 86 IROC that Ive ran into that has a small cap. can you post a lot of pictures of different angle of your distro as well as the connections too please?

Re: 86 z28 Trouble starting

Whoah: slow down Chevy86 IROC-Z. I know your worried about your dizzy, but this thread is about helping the poster get his camaro to start reliably. We can't diagnose and test that if his dizzy is in pieces on his kitchen floor. Lets get his car running, then if he wants, he can help you with your thing. We don't wanna complicate a starting problem by disassembling the underhood components of his car.

Re: 86 z28 Trouble starting

so you have a F.I. system so there is no issue with the floater thing that carbs have. Hmmm. Do you have a coolant leak by any chance? Moisture build up in the Dizzy will cause the the Dizzy to behave badly.

Re: 86 z28 Trouble starting

Check out these websites below, I believe Street Lethal is correct about the starter, seems like the starter solenoid but of course, it could be something else.
