I keep smelling gas when I turn.. 1988 Iroc 5.0 TPI
Hey guys, the PO had the fuel pump changed on my dad's '88 Iroc Convertible.. Is there a rubber gasket that goes into the fuel neck? I think we have a leak.. Whenever we turn I notice a strong smell of fuel, and I've chased it to the rear of the car.. Fuel hasn't leaked out.. I'm just worried about a fire.

Gas cap?
Maybe the O-ring dried out and cracked. There is not gasket in the neck, it's welded to the tank.

I found a white plastic piece coming from the top of the tank, it clips into a little metal bracket.. Looks like a vent to me.. Would this cause this stink? There is no leaks anywhere else that I can see, I went around touching anything that looked wet and smelling it..

That little white flying-saucer looking gadget is an air check valve. It allows air into the tank only. There is a tank pressure control valve up in the engine compartment off of the vapor line from the tank (looks like a little black disk with two large ports and one small port). It relieves at around 2psi, and also allows vapors to be collected and recycled by the charcoal canister system.
I had some issues with fuel smell, and I found that vapor line to be rusted and plugged inside. This was causing excessive pressure in the tank (which was also causing some fuel pump issues); excessive to the point that I would take the cap off and it would vent ALOT, I couldn't even get the cap back on for 5 or more seconds! Not good. I cleared that line and haven't had any problems since. This is a good thing for everyone to check, especially those who have continued to burn through fuel pumps.

It doesn't do that high pressure noise when you take the cap off, either.. We went and bought some POR 15 gas tank sealant and soaked the top of the tank with it, We also sealed around the welds for the fuel neck.. We'll see how it goes.
