Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Brandon, How you doing my friend? I think Im on to something but I need to know if its possible. Do you think that this temperature switch would be the answer for our EGR temp switch? From my finding of 136* F which is what the EGR switch actually grounds at (in my IROC), maby we can some how bolt this down somewhere onto our TPI intake manifolds so that it can react to the conductive heat.

The link is here so that everyone can read the details,,,,,

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Hawks needs to buy out this guy. This is great news that the EGR temp sensor is available. Because of the demand, id hate to see this price increase. For example, i once needed a pulley for my alternator. The junk yard heard that the pulley was becoming rare, (not true) junk yard wanted 105 dollars. I went across the street to a Tractor/Farming supplies, 5 bucks out the door. I needed a memcal one time, a rare parts store wanted 200 dollars. i got it for less than 50 at a GM dealership in Sunnyvale, CA. Sold it to me for dealer price, same with new york corvette dealership on the prom, 70 bucks....Ebay bought out paypal and naming rights. The douche running for governor of cali is the CEO of ebay, Meg Whitman. I despise this official and fear a sell out for profit if she becomes governor. But despite the fact a manufacturing plant refused to build these sensors, and GM discontinuing production of Pontiac, i can see our cars increasing in value and will become a Classic in the near future.

sweet, i need to do a complete overhaul. Engine transmission and differential. Im leaning towards for just rebuild of stock 126,000 miles original everything (i only put maybe 18,000 miles in about 6 years thats average 3k a year). but a big block and a T56 transmission sounds in enticing..

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I wonder what would happen if you would block off the EGR and then run the temp switch into one of the exhaust tubes, it shouldn't trip the CEL but would it work? Any ideas if something could be rigged like this. I still have my EGR and plan on keeping it, I run quite a bit of timing (38 degrees total) and would be afraid of possibly bypassing the EGR and getting a knock from detonation. Any one have a simple bypass method other then the one that is on here already? The more ideas, the better.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

The temp of the exaust would enable the egr a heck of a lot sooner because the exaust. Also I haven't heard of a temp switch that can handle a 600* exaust temp. Another issue would be having a custom made port to insert the temp sensor (if one is available) into the header. There was a idea made by Chevy8588. Chevy8588 suggested a vacuum type delay switch. I think its page 2 or 3.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

somebody clue me in. I have a 91 Camaro with Speed Density. I am presently using an 89 Formula TPI in my Camaro. I do not have the Thermistor switch hooked up because I don't need it from what I understand. Am I right? If I am right, I can sell the one I have to someone who needs it for $30. Terry at paterra1 on thirdgen.org. or 661-943-1739.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

You do need it. If you do yearly smog test, then of course you'll need it. You'll also help the engine last longer because when the switch grounds itself, it'll open the egr solenoid which allows exaust to enter the combustion chambers. If you don't allow exaust in the chambers, the upper cylinder can get really hot which can lead to detonation. Remember that detonation can occur even if you don't hear it.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Whoa, I am glad you mentioned that to me since my engine is new and don't want to damage it. I cannot find the connector on the harness to plug it into. Can I find the pin on the ecu and see if there is a wire that should go to it? What a great guy you are to help me on this. Why are some guys saying I do not need it?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Because some just relay what they hear. They don't know exactly what the egr is or what it does which is bad advice practice. For example, I could of just said yes you do need it and hit reply but no. I gave you an explanation of what the device does. And others just don't care. Good luck. Ill help you out on the pinout in a bit.

attention to detail is another factor. You must read the whole subject before you answer. he does have a 89 TPI Formula in his 91 Camaro. Again, attention to detail.

I have a heated egr in my intake base on my 91 z. Should I ground the sensor or just replace the whole egr.

I'm running spd density and my question was only if the heated egr will work properly in my car. If it doesn't make a difference I won't bother with taking it off.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I did forget to mention that I put 88 vette alum heads on the motor also. I hooked up the small water connection which is for detonation (at least this is what I understand) and since the egr does not have the provisions on the heads between the intake ports I used the provision on the back of the intake manifold which is the older style (no cold start injector or ninth injector) which is susposed to be the way to hook it up and then from there it goes to the exhaust manifold. Hope I don't confuse anyone trying to help me, but I completely forgot that the whole picture must be explained in order to get the help I need. I hope someone can straighten me out on this somehow so I don't detonate my motor. But my mistake is I forgot to give all the facts of my engine. The tpi is from an 89 formula and the harness is from another firebird without the hookup for the thermistor temp wire even though the intake manifold I am using is with that thermistor temp and wire. The 91 Camaro manual I have doesn't show that I need the wire in fact the schematics call it a MAT sensor which I think is the sensor in the front of the intake by the heater hose outlet. Help!

I think you're SOL unless someone has an extra one and is willing to part with it.

There's an ebay seller that has been trying to sell one for a while. The auction pops up every few months or so. The only thing wrong with it is the wire and connector has broken off the sensor portion. The seller claims it will work if you solder the wire back on.

Oh, another thing; he wants a small fortune for it. IIRC, the first time I saw it listed, he wanted +$300 for it. And this was without the pigtail.

Its not a sensor. Its a switch.

The part descriptions say the photos may be generic. But the one you need looks like the second one:

You can get lucky if you hit the junkyards. Here's a greater idea, hit the junkyards and get a few. Then sell them. But don't get too greedy and sell them for $80 a piece. Before these pieces went discontinued, they where only $25 at the dealership. I would hate to see a fellow TGO member sell a little tiny switch for more than a Reman ECM from Autozone. Can you say price gouging?

Yes. Just as long as it has the same thread. Also what may change is the pig tail connector. The sest way to test if it is operating correctly is by running it under hot water. Connect one end to the "barrel" and the other end to the pigtail. Then switch the multimeter to continuity. Your gonna need a laser thermometer. The switch should ground itself at around 130*. To know when the switch grounds out, keep an eye on the multimeter. Once you see many numbers showing, then its working. If the numbers stay on zero and the water is scalding, then the switch is not working properly. Does my explaination make sense?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

IIRC, when the EGR Temp Switch grounds, it send a signal to the ECM that the intake manifold base is around 130*. When the ECM "sees" the 130*, it'll trigger the EGR Solenoid to open the valve and allow vacuum. The vacuum will then pull open the EGR Valve and allow exaust into the combustion chamber. The exaust will help reduce upper cyinder temperatures which reduces the chances of detonation (engine knock/ping), Another reason for the exaust into the chamber is to reduce NOX from the exaust. So if the SES light engages with the troublecode of EGR error, then you shouldnt have too much of a problem. Just know the fact that you will more than likely fail an emissions test.

Hello Deven534!!

Try www.compnine.com he lists his temp switches at $30.80 GM Part # 14087416 usually when his site lists an item, it's because he has them.

If you hope to find any in the junk yard, look at Camaros, Firebirds, and Corvettes with 305/350 TPI, as they were the only ones to get it!!

Best of luck finding any of those cars!!

You could try www.autopartauctions.com also, no promises, but he has them listed there from time to time!!

I bought three for $50.00 each in Dec 2009!!

P.S. The reason that the link provides two pictures is for the two different brands, the first picture is a Standard Motor Products brand, and it's a generic picture (I do believe that the picture shows one for an "import" car), the second listing is a Delphi brand, and it shows the correct picture of the part that you want!!

I have seen that the Corvette switch is a different part number due to a shorter wire!!

The EGR Temp Switch isn't used by the ECM to tell it to open the EGR valve. Rather, the EGR Temp Switch tells the ECM if the EGR has opened.

When the ECM commands (requests??) EGR, it expects to see the EGR Temp Switch close. If it remains open, the ECM will set the SES light.

An SES light that is on during an emissions test is typically an automatic FAIL.

No big deal. I have an extra already. It was worth a shot. They did refund the money.

Or someone didn't take the two minutes to walk down the aisle to confirm it's on the shelf.
