I have a 90 3.1 and a 700R4 out of a 90 firebird that I am putting in my jeep, My jeep has a manual speedometer and I want to keep it that way, I am not using the cruise on the engine and have removed it and plan to install a switch for the lockup in the transmission. A/c will not be used.
My question is
Is the vss signal needed for the engine computer the jeep is used primarlly used for offroad rock crawling and will only see occasional road use and if it is not needed is there any pramaters that I need to dissable when I reprogram my 7730 computer?

Vats, Egr, vss error,egr diag error,vats error,
any suggestions are welcome

 

I have a 90 TPI system in my Blazer.. I dont have the money for a VSS.. if I did... I would get it.. There has been numerous times I would come to a stop at a light or stop sign and my vehicle dies.. that is due to not having a VSS.. the weird thing now is.. I have been runnig my truck like this for a little while since I rebuilt my engine and tranny.. I believe the computer has adapted to not having the VSS.. my truck doesnt die anymore.. but like I said.. if I had the money... I would get it.. I want to do everything the way it is suppose to be! there is my 2 cents..

 

The 700R4 will have a VSS provision, you must swap tailhousings to get use of a cable driven unit. Jagsthatrun sells a cable to electronic adapter that retains the use of the cable speedo and fixes the electronic VSS to ECM problem

Actually, it's the exact same between the two, the VSS drive bolts into the same hole as the mechanical speedo unit. I have 1 of each sitting right here...
The only difference would be if the 700 is getting bolted to a transfer case. Then it's a different tail shaft housing anyway.

If it's new enough it may have an optical VSS on the back of the speedometer.

 

A NP231c transfer case is going to be bolted on the rear of the transmission and the adapter between has a lower mount for a block type mount the speedo drive is in the output of the transfer case, the chevy transfercase came with a elec speed sensor but the slipyoke eliminator I am putting on it is for the gear type unless i can get a different sye housing to install the elec sensor, but does it have to have a vss or will I have problems I seldom drive it on the road its used mainly off road and crawling rocks so the lock up proabally wont be used.

 

Not absollutly positve but I think the speed sensor is only controlling tcc and cruise through the computer, as far as engine goes I don't think it will affect it.

 

The ECM uses the VSS for alot of things not related to cruise and TCC
