Timing help

I have been having many issues with my 91 Z28. It has the 305. It cranks and has been sounding like it wants to kick over but doesn't. Felt the manifolds and 2 is hot but the others are cold. Figured that the last thing I would do before junking the car was to check timing. Set the balancer mark to TDC and pulled the cap. The rotor is pointing to 6 as best I can see. Yes, I know thats off but the question is how much? Can I reseat the dist and get this thing running or do I need to pull the front off and check the marks on the crank and cam?

Re: Timing help

There are a lot of unanswered questions. Did the car ever run? Did you do something to the timing? and lots of others. However, if you suspect your timing is off than pulling the distributor, setting your engine at #1 and TDC, and replacing the distributor is probably your best bet. Have you changed wires, plugs, distributor, etc?

Re: Timing help

Agree with above, a lot on unanswered questions. As far as your timing, either you dont have the motor at TDC truly (180 degress out) or your distributor is installed 180 degrees out. Did you put the distributor in yourself?? check to make sure your at true TDC. Also, is the firing order correct? 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 . TDC should be pointing at number one cylinder. off just a little will cause it not to run.
