Air Intake Modifications and MAF

I have an 85 Trans Am with the 305 TPI powerplant. Wasnt too impressed with the air intake, so am doing some mods. First, removing the thin plastic box and replacing with air hose. That is behind the MAF, so no problem. However, the next mods planned are in front of the MAF. I will either build a whole new CAI, or modify the stock filter canister by cutting holes in the bottom to increase cold air flow. Here is my question: At what point does the MAF need to be recalibrated or replaced? Will increasing air flow while still using the existing filter require it? Or, going beyond that to build a whole new CAI, K & N or similar? This is probably a common question, but I couldnt seem to find specifics on the Board.

Re: Air Intake Modifications and MAF

Take baffles out of box, cut holes in bottom of box, go to K &N filters. As far as the MAF, very carefully cut the screen out of it, very restrictive.....
