88 Iroc L98 Auto

Hello all...My iroc just died the other day and doesn't start anymore. I hear the fuel pump when I turn the ignition on but it just cranks. Any suggestions on diagnosis or what I can check ..? Thanks all.

Is there spark? Do you hear the fuel pump running for 2 seconds after you stop cranking?

Re: 88 Iroc L98 Auto

Can be numerous issues, check for spark first. Also, had a recent problem on my 88, was running fine, then got to where it wouldnt start. Had plenty of spark. Could smell fresh gas but couldnt locate it. Thought the gas smell was from flooding. Kept checking and found where an injector o ring had busted and was blowing gas down the backside of the manifold so it was hard to see. Replaced it and it cranked and ran fine since.

Take off the ignition coil on the car take it to an advance auto parts near you, they should be able to test it. I work for the advance in pensacola, fl and we now this feature we we can test the coils and know what voltage each coil is suppost to be putting out. its an easy, and free start, unless you need a new one, and they are only like 20 bucks for the coil.

Re: 88 Iroc L98 Auto

first you check if your getting any engines codes lol.. how was it running before..did it sounds or drive rough..need more info other than it just died.check engine light code will help us point you in a very good direction of what the ecm is doing or not.

if there are no codes then start checking the basics..gas..air and spark.pull a spark plug out and see if its soaked in gas..completly white..or black.

Re: 88 Iroc L98 Auto

I say its the ignition module. Do this, get an old spark plug and pull one of the boots off an installed s.plug, plug it to the extra s.plug and have someone crank the car while you hold the extra s.plug near or on the engine block (to be grounded). If you see spark then your problem isn't ignition. If you see no spark, then you have to track down one of the ignition components thats failed...

ps, don't hold the s.plug in your hand, hold the rubber part of the boot (so you don't get shocked)...

Re: 88 Iroc L98 Auto

it should still start up if it has maf problems, it'll just idle roughly... verify spark.

Re: 88 Iroc L98 Auto

i had the same problem and found it was the hall effect sensor in the ditributor. had a friend check it and sure enough not enough magnetics on the sensor to give enough spark.you can pick one from a junk yard for maybe 20 or so bucks. just to try but it happend to me

Re: 88 Iroc L98 Auto

This happens to me occasionally. I just spray Starting fluid in the throttle body, then run around to start it. I works every time. Try that. I don't know what that means, but someone gave me that suggestion one time.
