you can, but generally a scope will do a better job. If you really are serious about getting into these cars, I suggest hitting ebay for a used snap-on MT2500 red brick scanner. it hooks up to your ALDL port under the dash and displays real time sensor values. Get one with a primary cartridge and troubleshooter cartridge, both domestic, for coverage up to 95 and you can easily do things with these cars.
