coil-in-cap conversion?
Hey guys, I was wondering if a coil-in-cap conversion helps bring more out of the engine. My car is a 91 Trans Am with the 305 TPI engine. Currently the coil is mounted separately and obviously connected to the distributor with a 6 inch wire. I thought that the coil in cap might be better since everything is closer together. And if I should stick with the stock set up, are there any good aftermarket coils? Lemme know your thoughts. Thanks!

Re: coil-in-cap conversion?
In the '80s we were modding the other way. The idea was to divorce the coil and allow it to run cooler. Don't think either makes much difference. With a stock, or near stock, motor the sparkplugs will only use the spark energy they need to jump the gap. Well within the capabilities of the stock system.

It can be done, you would have to swap out the whole distributor and also some adaptors for the wire harness. Probably won't get any performance gains tho.
check out jegs or summit for hi powered coils.

Oh ok, all I wanted to know if there were any enhancements. Isolating it from the heat makes sense. I'll be sure to check out jegs or summit. What do you think of this hypertech setup?

Re: coil-in-cap conversion?
Unless you need to replace all those parts I wouldn't bother. Like was said before, it only uses the power needed to jump the spark plug gap, which is well within the limits of the stock system.

Re: coil-in-cap conversion?
If you want to do this the 1986 through 1991 corvette distributers were coil in cap design and with a simple adapter you can run that design. It will not give you a performance boost.

No mating connector exists for the 4 cavity metripack 150.2 connector at the ignition module. You would have to cut and splice a pigtail for the large cap HEI.
