i've got an 89 trans am ws6 with the 305 tpi automatic. i had problems a few years back with it running poorly and wheezing when you shut it off. i took it to yinglings and it cost me a boatload for them to work on it. when i got in it it ran worse than before,and they wanted more money to look at it(i fixed the plug wires that they never reconnected when i picked it up.now its 3 years later and i would like to get it back on the road again as backup to my 94 v6 bird which has over 210k on it. anybody know of a decent shop and/or mechanic in topeka that knows the tpi system and works at a fair rate(i really dont want to take it to the dealership. any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's wrong with it exactly? I haven't heard about anyplace specializing in these cars, and I wouldn't really expect to find a mechanic that knows too much about TPI specifically. I'm not a mechanic or in Topeka (a little over an hour away) but I've been known to take poorly running (not running) late 80's early 90's fuel injected cars and make them function reliably. Depending on what problems you're having I might be able to help you out.

 

it went into the shop to stop the sound of vaccum or pressure releasing when i shut the engine off. they talked me into replacing a lifter while they were at it and when i got it back it ran way worse. when i got home i popped the hood and immediately noticed two plug wires unhooked at the cap. i hooked them back up and tried to restart the car but it acted like it was starving for fuel. finally it started again and idled better so i figured id let it sit awhile in case it was flooded being fuel injected. i tried to start it the next day but it was even harder to start. the day after that it wouldnt start at all. i hate all the electronic failure possabilities on these cars and was hoping to have the benefit of a good shop to find and solve the problem,but i think everything they possably did needs to be gone over again from the intake up. i like to work on my pontiac v8s but i have no patience when it comes to all the variables in the tpi system. im sure the chevy dealership could fix it but im afraid i could buy another one for the price they would charge. i am frustrated severely because the car ran great before they got it and now it sits in my garage. thanks,jj

I agree. Essentially the board has become a lounge packed with so much BS that a normal-witted enthusiast is disgusted. Don't seek advice or look for encouragement because you certainly won't find it there. Moreover, the board seems to have become a haven for fourthgenners.

go to mkc performance in kansas city they have a nice shop and did my buddy's car up clean at a very resonable price and fixed a lot of his items at no charge

 

Modified by KC is a sweet place. They have a decent variety of projects, but mostly focus on 4cyl and turbo stuff. Very cool setup there though with the AWD dyno and all.

 

true they do specialize in the import seen however I have seen vette's, T/A's, and mustang that have all come out of that shop with top notch work. Too bad I just left FT Riley area or I would come up and help with that car

 

yeah it doesnt run right now but it doesnt look good for finding a quality shop here in topeka. looks like im gonna have to do the dreaded and get my hands dirty on a fuel injected engine-my patience isnt good on computer controlled engines. guess id better research.

 

lots of good shops in topeka, whiteys on 45th street ask for jim or pat,i know its an old post but if its still broke they can fix it.
