black box to right of wiper motor, what is it?

Just wondering - 89 Firebird 305TPI. There's a black box to the right of the wiper motor under the hood, looks to have five wires in/out or so says "GUIDE" lightly in the plastic. Not sure what it is, so I'm guessing it might be unnecessary

I'm in the midst of a carb swap, and plan to be removing useless items.

Thanks

You don't know what it is, so it must be useless?

Going for a PURELY track car? (yes, i know exactly what the box is for but.....)

Well, when your car has tons of problems from the previous owner and in your testing of all sorts of stuff... if you don't come across a specific item it probably does something non-vital. lol.

after pulling the box off and looking at the wiring (really quickly, it is midnight hear and I plan to go to bed soon)... it looks to perhaps be for the wiper motor speed control. Though I thought that was controlled by the electronics under the cover of the wiper motor housing and such...

Though it may not be for this, I just looked really quickly.

Nope, not going for a pure track car - just a street car that works. The last straw with the TPI was the leaky throttle shaft. It would leak only at certain angles and only when it wanted to - which was generally in a certain RPM range. After all of the stuff I put up with from the car from the prev owner, I didn't really want to buy a throttle body that could also be leaky. The problem was, when I tested things - everything was bad. Coil, injectors, O2 sensor, plugs, wires, timing chain, among others.

Everyone loves the Bosch III's - well, for me the car ran equally crappy to the previous bad Multecs. lol

EDIT: Speaking of wipers, I failed inspection for no HI wiper setting. I pulled apart the column..twice. and tested wiring, everything.. I could force HI wipe but the switch wouldn't do it. I replaced the switch, no go. prev owner put a non-intermittent shaft on an intermittent car. The shaft just wouldn't turn far enough.. Until I opened it and "modified" the tabs inside... Imagine if the owners of our cars 20 years ago had as much pride in them as we have now...

Plan to drive it at night?

I think even if you don't, it probably wouldn't pass inspection without it, despite there being a manual "bypass" built in to these cars.

Re: black box to right of wiper motor, what is it?

Well well well - they sure took up enough engine bay space for a box that doesn't seem necessary. I mean... oh, wait a minute... I was going to say how simple a headlight circuit seems in most cars..... though most cars don't have flip up headlights. d'oh!

I wish they tucked more of this stuff under the dash, I mean - when they take your glove compartment and effectively put it in the trunk you would think they would make better usage of the space up in the dash!

If i had one wish in life... I would just wish for a cupholder. Between the stick shift and the seat being bent back buy a rather large prev owner, it's pretty tough to drive with a cup of coffee in hand. I feel like I'm flying some sort of small aircraft.

Re: black box to right of wiper motor, what is it?

The box is "so big", because it is 2-circuits-in-1. That way if 1 headlight fails to come up, the other should stay functioning.

As for a cupholder.....Get yourself a 4th gen center console. If you have power windows, you'll hafta mount them in the console somewhere (in the ash tray is a common choice) & other than that (power window/power mirror/hatch pop switches) it is virtually a drop-in item!
