Re: heads ?
I believe the heads changed the two center bolts on either side of the intake mount in '88 . You cant use 046 or 461x type heads cause of lack of accessory holes .Your stock Alum. heads are great heads with some pocket porting and port matching. do that and a steady diet of mustangs and Hondas

Re: heads ?
LB9 is the 5.0L with iron heads. 416 castings are common LB9 heads and they have 58cc combustion chamber, and 158cc intake port volumes.
You could get the chamber volume you want from your stock heads by deshrouding the chambers and/or using different valves. Using a thicker headgasket will also increase the virtual chamber volume. I just don't understand why you'd want to do that if you are running fine with the stock 58cc chamber volume.

That's 10 cfm off Vortec heads...and the best part is you already own these ones.

Re: heads ?
Maybe that person was confused, or the message got confused.
Increasing air-flow through the head is the way to increase performance.
Reducing chamber volume increases compression and power/efficiency to a certain point - as much as the engine can handle on pump-gas.
You should do a lot more research before planning a cylinder head change or modification.
IMO, for a 305, the best budget upgrade you can do to your factory heads is a DIY porting job, along with a valve upgrade/conversion, with machine work and reconditioning done by a reputable head/machine shop.
Information about a budget LSX valve conversion can be found in two links in my signature.
